Thanks, Ski! I thought so, but wanted to make sure. I am guessing if there is not a decline button, a short thanks but no thanks email addressed to the AO is the way to go.
Yes. That works fine.
So-- we are back from WashU. OMG - what an amazing school. Gorgeous area - gorgeous facilities. People running and cycling everywhere - what with the HUGE park (which houses the zoo, science center, art museum) adjacent to campus. We were alotted 2 hours to tour the campus and we used all of it. I don’t know how this school gets overlooked or how some of the Ivies get chosen over WashU. (well, I do, but it isn’t a good enough reason IMO). The only thing that disappointed us about this school is not getting merit (and that is on my kid, not the school, obviously).
@one1ofeach many Harvard grad friends of mine sent their kids to WashU and told us it was exceptional - and I now know why. We LOVED everything about it. I even stupidly left my keys in our unlocked car with my purse inside and it was all still there at the end of our 2 hour tour.
I can’t say enough good things about WashU. Definitely should be on anyone’s consideration list!
@buuzn03 Thank you! So nice to have in person reviews.
So-- DS will be attending SMU - Honors Program. Although a big portion of his decision was financial, he also realized that SMU offered him everything many of the big name schools did. In fact, in some areas, SMU offered more opportunity. The only thing he said he would miss out on is “the name”. So, this is why it is very important, IMO, to look at the college acceptance lists for schools instead of (or in addition to) their matriculation. Matriculation lists alone do not come close to telling the whole story.
Congrats @buuzn03 ! My oldest attended SMU (with some merit, but not honors). He graduated 4 years ago, and is on a great career trajectory. He loved his time there!
AWESOME! @cinnamon1212 We would LOVE any tips/advice etc you or your kid may be able to bestow. Although we know Dallas very well, we are not familiar with the school beyond the Zooms we have had.
Congratulations!!! Four (maybe 5?) Cate students matriculated to SMU last year. Out of 75 kids total! I don’t know much about the school myself, but that got my attention.
Congratulations, @buuzn03 ! Excellent choice!!
Oh, and yes on the acceptances vs matriculation. DS had many friends and classmates who turned down schools more likely to impress on a college matriculation list for ones they could afford.
Hmmm, I don’t think I can offer any particular tips, as I’m removed from SMU by time and distance. My son was in Cox, if that’s of interest. He did join a fraternity, which was a big part of his time there. I have some mixed feelings about that, but on balance was a good thing. One of his profs was instrumental in my son getting an interview for his 1st job out of college. Dallas is a great city to be a young person in!
Thanks…from what I have heard, the school is morphing (or trying to) from their legacy kid party society to a more balanced, but academically focused environment. DS will be in Lyle, but wants to double major/minor in unrelated humanities disciplines, also.
They have intersessions (courses during breaks) where kids can get 3 hr credit course in 8-11 days to help with triple majors/extra minors etc. They also have their Taos campus which affords unique interactive/experiential courses in archeology, anthropology, sociology in addition to studying abroad.
Dallas is a great city for young professionals. And it is good that we had spent so much time there when DS played travel hockey - he is very familiar with the town and where all the good eateries are (insert Torchy’s here lol).
We are excited-- the best part is the drive to Dallas, albeit considered far for most, for us is an easy 6 hour drive. And we can also hop on a 45 minute flight - so, it will be good to be able to see DS more often than we have been in the last 4 years.
The school is definitely on the upswing. It has great resources, and is using them to evolve from a regional school to a national one. Much like Northeastern did 20 years ago (among others). They are consciously admitting more prep school kids. Now it’s become one of the go-to schools in that world.
Awesome, @buuzn03! Congrats to your son! I now that a number of Salisbury kids have gone to SMU over the past several years — it seems very popular. Definitely a change from a small school in the cold!
It’s been fun seeing where all the kids are choosing, including DS’s little friend group from his K-8 school. I feel like that just graduated from 8th grade. I also got the “from the Dean’s office” email today about move-out logistics and I almost cried.
Wooohooooooo @buuzn03!!! This is exciting news that DS is Texas-bound!
We just had a 8th grade mom’s group text last night about where DS’s small group of friends were headed…there was a part of me that always hoped they would reconnect at college. But it doesn’t appear so. What was really strange was that circumstances (job transfers, etc) had all of them but one leave the LDS they were at for 8th. So, even if DS hadn’t gone to BS, the group would’ve been split up.
It’s so neat to see where these kids are headed but sad to think of how fast time goes…
I just wanted to reach out and wish all of the parents and kids from this years BS VI Form Class a huge CONGRATULATIONS! I hope everyone’s graduation was memorable. Great job, guys! And now, On to the next Great Adventure!
Amen!
CONGRATS to the 21’ers!
