Hey guys I'm new to the forum and my question is how useful is a BS in Econ? or even employable? I've looked this up for the past few hours and I keep finding mixed opinions on it, most of them being that you need to have a Masters or Ph.d for it to be useful. So those types of comments kind of have me on bay a bit. However I really like Econ and I feel like it'd be flexible for the things I want to do such as business and later down the road politics. Anyhow how would it match up to Finance? Which btw is the major I'm mostly leaning towards. Also what type of jobs does a BS in Econ typically get you once you complete it?

You probably saw this already, but just in case:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/business-major/714409-why-you-should-major-economics.html

Depending on the school you graduate from you’ll have varying amounts of success and options, so keep that in mind when deciding. (Same as any major really, except accounting)

Also, you need internships more so with an economics major since it isn’t an applicable skill, so to speak as accounting or MIS. Definitely get some internship experience. And you can basically get any job a finance major can get. But if you really like econ you should go for that because you will most likely get a higher GPA in it. Also, Econ majors have higher GMAT scores than other business majors. Higher GMAT= better graduate college, higher paying job. Another thing to consider is once you get a job you can work in different areas in business and then get an MBA in a concentration you like the most.

Thanks I just looked through that, very informative.

Yea I mean, I was probably like the only kid in my class last year in HS that actually enjoyed Econ, everyone else just called it stupid and pointless, I guess because most of them were failing that class.

Econ major can get into various business related fields. A lot depend on your college, gpa, work experience. I know 2 econ majors, 1 is working in consulting and 1 is an analyst.

Do you think Econ would be more useful than a Finance degree?

That’s like saying “Do you think mechanical engineering will be more useful than electrical engineering ?”

It depends on your interest. Both are useful.

Hmm I see your point.
