BS in Psychobiology discontinued?

Imagine our surprise to learn on the Chapman website that the BS in Psychobiology was not admitting anymore students to the program after Fall 2007! And my D was admitted to the program, beginning in 2008! Oops! Anyone else experience this? Seems like Admissions doesn't know what is going on here.

Wow, straycat, that is strange. I guess your daughter had better change her major. I would phone Chapman ASAP, and find out what is going on. She will probably get to choose Psychology or Biology as a major. Does any other school that she likes have the combined major? That may be a deal breaker. (Unless she is like my daughter who changes her mind weekly, so it really wouldn't matter!)

It seems they have done away with the degree (altho I don't know why Admissions wouldn't know this) but have added a new degree called Bachelor of Health Sciences. It is not the same degree. The head of the department, Dr. Georg Eifert, says the Psychobiology degree wasn't as interdisciplinary as they had wanted, so in an effort to be innovative and proactive, they developed and certified this new degree. (not too many of these programs in the US, but plenty in New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere. Apparently, this line of study has the same importance as IT did say, 15-20 years ago) There are 2 tracks to the program and a Master of Health Science in Health Communications that can be obtained in 1 year. After looking over the particulars, it seems much, much more intense on the science side than the psychology side. A plus for some, a minus for others. The thing is, it seems you'd better know that this is what you want to focus on when you start your Freshman year, as the schedule seems really intense with no time to falter. Also, if D wants to head to med school after the undergraduate work, this would not be the major to set her up for that.

D is also contemplating College of Charleston that has a neurobiology minor. It will take a second visit to each school to see what direction she wants to go. And like you, Adultparentmom!, my daughter seems to change her mind as the wind blows, but this seemed kind of like a big deal. She looked over all the info that Dr. Eifert sent me and seems to be mulling it over. To her, it's not a big deal, so maybe I shouldn't worry about this!

Have a nice EAster, everyone!
