@asianproud did you get in? @gofkr not to mention, UTHSCSA just renovated their library and just signed an agreement with the childrens hospital of Pennsylvania to start a new hospital in San antonio! This is huge! The school’s mission right now is put this probation thing behind them and I believe, indubitably, they are going in the right path. In fact, they recently recruited the previous rice/baylor coordinator to be one of the Deans. I even heard from some students that the dean and admins are trying to bring this school to southwestern’s level.

On a final note, no medical school in the history of the US has lost accreditation. George Washington and Dartmouth medical school were put on probation before, but they were able to adequately address and fix any accusations the LCME casted. Albeit, they still well-regarded in the medical community. Even the world renowned STANFORD school of medicine was almost put on probation a few years earlier.

In conclusion, I believe I would receive a great education from UTHSCSA if I decide to go there. I’m still waiting from other school, but my decision will not be based on something menial as probation.

Also, does anyone know when we are s’pose to hear from the UTD pact program?

No, I didn’t, but probably would have if I was from San Antonio like you are.

"@gofkr The UTHSCSA (not UTSA) school of medicine is phenomenal. The opportunities that this school provides for heir undergraduate and medical students are beyond world class. I have worked at this med school for the past two years, and the whole probation thing went way out of proportion. The LCME (accrediting committee) have been frustrated with all US medical schools with the way medicine was being taught. We all know that medicine is an ever changing field with the addition of knowledge via research and clinical practices, and the LCME felt that medical schools were not preparing it students adequately for its fickle nature. Thus the LCME decided they were going to raise their standard a little more, and chose UTHSCSA and NY Downstates as their guinea pigs just to prove a point. If you luck carefully at some of the allegations that LCME had against UTHSCSA, you can see that they are ridiculous. The LCME was frustrated with their archaic curriculum that have teaching doctors since the 70’s, despite its propensity to produce competent, caring physicians. They thought that curriculum was too lecture-based and less hands on. They were also unhappy with the the way UTHSCSA was documenting their clinical evaluations. What the LCME failed to take in account was that UTHSCSA was already planning on changing their curriculum to something more innovative - similar to the curriculum of UCLA. This new “circle” curriculum has been put in place for the class of 2016, and it is already receiving accolades. This new curriculum entails 1.5 year curriculum, coupled with early exposure and electives. It is also more problem based and active learning. One med student even told that the students will have the opportunity to take an internal medicine rotation, which, they said, would help them perform significantly better on the step 1 exam."

I agree that UTHSCSA is a good med school with good people and good faculty but most off that is just blowing smoke. It’s not amazingly phenomenal at all compared to other med schools, basically nothing compared to Southwestern/Baylor and the probation thing definitely damaged its reputation. It’s a good school, but that’s not anything different than what I would say about any of the other allopathic schools in Texas.

Also I have no hard feelings about not getting accepted, this is just an honest look at the school. DrKTC2013 is kind of looking at the school through rose colored glasses. But here’s the final, honest take: UTHSCSA is a good school, where you will get a good education, but certainly nothing great compared to most of the other schools in Texas. Also UTHSCSA likes people to go to Harlingen for the second 2 years of med school, which I’m not a fan of. In that aspect I would say TAMU is better with respect to Scott and White.

@asianandproud hey dude, im not trying to start a debate here. I am just fleshing out what I feel, and you are entitled to your own opinion. But I would not call UTHSCSA and the other texas schools nothing compared to UTSW&Baylor. All of them produce competent professionals able to handle the rigors of residency. UTSW&Baylor definitely have the name, but its not the school that defines you, its how you perform.

Also, it is encouraged, not required that you go to Harlingen for your last 2 years of med school. Based on what I have heard from some students, it is an unique experience that allows you to gain understanding of barriers and disparities in health care.

Good luck to everyone applying to BS/MD programs! And great job to everyone accepted! For anyone who applied to UT PACT tell me when invitations are coming out? On the website it says late February but when I got my confirmation email saying I sent everything it said early march. Im a nervous wreck here. Also can some people already accepted to joint degree programs in the UT TIME Initiative share their stats with me?

It has not been the case in the past. UTAustin, UTSA, UTD all started in the last year. Texas Tech used to have one where you could only qualify after spending an year at TTU. I am not certain how long UTMB has been around.

There were several programs like JAMP and another one that have been around to admit disadvantaged and rural kids but none based purely on merit until last year.

How good is the UMSI program at Texas tech, they accept only 8 incoming freshman out of 22 they called to interview ,no MCAT,I have an interview this friday, rejected from FAME after what I thought was a good interview…lol

Texas Tech med school is not ranked. However, they seem to be doing just fine for their residencies.

This program was started to compete against all the other programs. Before they just picked students from those enrolled after an year so they only selected people who chose to come to TTU first. I am not sure how the rules work for this one but if someone was selected and chose to take the MCAT, then they were dropped and were asked to apply with the general pool.

@DrKTC I wasn’t debating at all, just fleshing out my opinions as well. And yeah, all of the med schools in Texas are good but UTHSCSA isn’t as God like as you portrayed it in your earlier posts. Also I never said the Harlingen thing was required, but they do want you to do it as the dean told me.

But consider yourself lucky to get into FAME. The admissions people gave a pretty heavy preference to San Antonio people, because I made friends with many at my interview day that had higher academics than you, research, etc that got rejected. So don’t be overconfident, because UT Dallas doesn’t give San Antonio residents like yourself any type of preference. On the chance that you do get an interview with PACT there will be 50 people there ready to kick your ass for a seat.

Guessed as much, being from San Antonio had something to do with it,most of the people I interviewed with didnt get in and thier Stats were really impressive, but oh well, loose some win some , waiting on UMSI TTHSC,TAMHSC TX A&M, UT PACT and UT SHAPE.I want to stay in Texas, tuition is a lot less .
