*** BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2014***

I honestly have not heard of OOS students getting accepted to either Stony Brook or UConn. They don’t state that they have preferences but they might within the AdComs.

@bamd2014, ranking of medical school depends largely on the amount of federal research money the institution receives. Therefore, a big university will always have higher ranking because there are just many more investigators with funding than, say, a smaller institution. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see institution with only the medical school, e.g. AMC being ranked low or even unranked because AMC does not have any other departments except those supporting the medical school. Yet, AMC in my book is a good medical school. Coming back to TCMC, it is essentially a community medical school (or as you put it, a trade school). There is nothing wrong with being a community medical school or going to a community medical school. Many highly astute physicians have been trained in community medical schools because community medical schools are usually run be physicians and not researchers, many of whom spend very little time doing clinical work. So if you want to be an astute physician, there is nothing wrong going to a community medical school. However, if you aspire to be an academic and eventually holding leadership position in a large medical school, then do not go to a community medical school like TCMC.

@TheBombingRange, you are definitely correct for Stony Brook. My son wrote to the school and the director of the program a few months ago and was told that to qualify, he has to be a NY resident, have done high school education in NY state, and also have done the ?NY Regency exams.

@IMGDAD. That’s too bad about Stony Brook. I am OOS and applied. Well, I guess another rejection to look forward to…

@IMGDAD. I am sorry for the confusion. I meant Usciences undergrad school is unranked. I will be happy to get in TCMC after your reading your replies. I will probably not apply to stonybrook or Uconn as I am an OOS. Thanks to you and @TheBombingRange.

@bamd2014, most of the UG schools that offer the combine programs are schools that students of your caliber would normally not have gone to, unless it is for the combined program. So, the ranking of these UG schools is just “which one is the lower of the low”. I can say confidently that students who are on this thread will probably not go to most of the UG schools linked to the combined programs if they are only offered the UG admissions and not the BS/MD program.

@IMGDAD wow I did not know that they specified only in state students, I should check myself. May I ask who you contacted as the program director? We don’t really have a program director since there are many feeder options into the program at the med school like the Honors College, College of Engineering, and the WISE program, yet each of these programs has a director.

Had I not gotten into a combined program I was going to decide between Stony Brook and WPI for Biomedical Engineering anyway, so some, but not all, undergrad schools are attended solely for their combined programs. It really depends on personal preference.

Rejected from VCU GAP. Didn’t see that one coming. Oh well lol

Found out through email.

Good luck to everyone else.

My S just texted that he got rejection from VCU med…he hadn’t even applied. How weird is that.

@TheBombingRange, spoke with son and he could not remember who he corresponded with. My son also mentioned something about CUNY.

@MedicalBoy Same, got an email saying ‘Status Update’

@IMGDAD I’m not sure about Brooklyn College/SUNY Downstate but for Macaulay Honors College and Sophie Davis I am positive you need to be a NYS resident. I recall that you are in Texas, did your son apply to all of the Texas only programs?

@TheBombingRange, Texas Tech is the only Texas BS/MD program he has applied to. I do not think he would be competitive for the other Texas program. He has applied to many of the programs in the Northeast since we are moving up to the Northeast this summer.

Yup, also got rejected from vcu

Rejected from VCU also

@Collegeponderer and @txtony24:
Sorry to hear the news. Good luck with you remaining applications. Did you hear via email?

My S also rejected from VCU

Sorry about all the bad news from VCU. Luckily my son did not apply or he would have met the same fate. He wanted to apply but decided against it since he does not fulfill the basic entry requirement of 3 years of second language for VCU.

@IMGDAD, Okay my daughter is in the same boat. She did one year of spanish 1 in middle school. High school counts that as 1. So she did spanish 2 and 3 in freshman, sophomore years. So only two years of spanish at High school. But our high school considers it as 3 years of spanish. Do you think VCU will reject my daughter too since only spanish 2 and 3 show up on high school transcript? I heard VCU does take some OOS.

Sorry to hear about the rejections for VCU. I was wondering how many people applied to VCU medical program, and how many get interviewed? Because it seems like so many people were rejected from that program.
