Hey Everyone :)
I know there are a number of people who have in the past or are currently in the BS/MD programs. I was just wondering what the overall experience at each of the specific programs are. How are you liking it overall? Is there too much work (compared to other bs/md programs)? How is the atmosphere with other students - do the bs/md kids interact with other med students or stay in their own little group? Is it too stressful opposed to the regular 4+4? How expensive is it, opposed to other bs/md programs or 4+4 route? How is the city it is located - busy, relaxed, nice, not so nice? What are the pros and cons of the program? Would you recommend it, why? And if not, why so? I know I put a lot of questions out there! I'm just curious and I'd appreciate any responses. Thanks! :D

My D. has finished UG portion of bs/md, graduated, and has applied out of her program to see what other choices she might have. She choose 4+4 combined program over accelerated one. Her program also allowed he to apply out and still retain spot in a program. Her experience was not anyhow different from other pre-meds at her UG. She had few additional sessions with person in charge of her program at her UG. She also went to UG that fitted her personality and wide range of interests the best, she actually got much more opprotunities there than she has ever imagined as a HS’er. she also went on full tuition Merit Scholarship. She was the only one who applied out of her program, others did not want to bother and went straight to Med. School in their program. The fact that she had at least one spot at the beginning of application process, made huge difference during taking MCAT (since she needed only 27, she was more relaxed which enabled her to get much higher score) and interviews, and she was able to apply to fewer Med. Schools and be very choosy. She ended up being accepted at 4 out of 8 and has started at Med. School outside of her program. Being in a program has allowed my D. more enjoyable and relaxing UG experience in comparison to many other pre-meds at her UG. It has worked for her. It does not mean that it will work for everybody.

I know one friend at the UMKC six year program and one at the University of Miami (Ohio) direct program.

My friend at UMKC completed her freshman year and is now back at school because their year resumes in the summer. She found freshman year to be not to difficult, but she had to study MUCH harder than she did in high school (she attended a top 5 school magnet school in state, top 150 in the nation). The city however is quite terrible because there are some sketchy neighborhoods in the nearby area. In addition, her friends car window got broken into and her iPhone was stolen. That aside, she likes that she doesn’t have to take the MCAT and gets to graduate in six years.

My friend just graduated at Miami and is going to University of Cincinatti for medical school. We haven’t spoken much about his experience but he found the classes to be quite easy, which was surprising. However he did have to take the MCAT and he enjoyed the experience.

your daughter’s program seems like a good choice for her. which program did she attend?
