I am hearing about a complain about too much hw from BS students.

My D is attending a BS and she compains that some teachers do not teach very much and assign hw too much. I asked a few other kids who attend different BSs. They say the same thing. Of course they say that some teaches teach nice and good and assign less hw than other teachers.

I like to know more general opinios on this issue.

In visiting with D's teachers. Several spoke about an effort not to give too much homework. If each teacher gives a half hour of home work that equates to 2 1/2 - 3 hours a night.

Half hr hmk for each subject is reasonable, plus small / big projects. 3-4 hrs load for high school is quite normal, no matter at private school or public school.

One of my friend's daughter who is a junior now and takes 5 ap this year, complain teacher does not teach much and even one ap teacher said: you kids in ap are all smart and well prepared, well, if you have questions, ask during class but go study your own at home ....

My D is a 9th grder(III former0 at BS and taking honor algebra II class. She says that the math teacher teaches a little but assigns hw too much. She says that mst of the students in the class spend more than an hour to do math hw almost every day. In BS their schedul ends at 6:00 after dinner because they have a sports activity after class.
Sometimes the schedule ends at 7:00 when they have chapel. after shower they have at most 3 hours to do hw since 11:00PM is lighout. She is taking 6 classes: Math(Algebra II Honr, English, Physics, Spanish, Seminar, and Visula Arts). Sometimes she gets up at 5:00Am to finish hw forthat day. They have a frequent quiz and test they need to prepare for those. I wonder if it is a usual pattern in BS. They seem to have a very heavy load and bysu schedule. I am worried.

Six classes is a large load, because then there are fewer free periods to get work done during the day. Other than that, your daughter's work load sounds pretty typical of many boarding schools.

I'm a junior and there is definitely more homework than at my old school, but I'm also taking more APs. I'm in 3 aps this year and have about 4 or 5 hours of homework a night. It isn't bad doing it, it's just finding the time between class, sports, and food. Actually, all of my homework except APUS and the occasional English essay would probably take me an hour, maybe an hour and a half. Its AP US history that I have about 3 hours a night in.

My teachers teach though. I have really good teachers, actually.

Is six class a really large load? One of them is Arts. Of course Arts class has hw as well.
Since one year art class is required, I thought it's a good idea to take it during III form.
That way, she can have some flexibility from next year.

Son is sophomore, he takes 7 classes this year. So far, he is ok at work load, but not happy about his grade (said it's very hard to get A). He said some teachers gave them really hard test, he has to study a lot and ask questions. Overall, he likes the BS better than phs, because the teachers and more challenge. He is quite organized and he does the hwk during free periods and study hall hours and few hrs during weekend.

He sounds very tired everyday. At home, he has a lot of activities after school or weekend, but at BS, sometimes he told me there is nothing to do (although he already joined some clubs). I don't know how other kids deal with this.

I am hearing similar things from my D. She used get 100 or close to 100 on tests during middle school days. Now she says that the exam(especially honor algebra II) is so hard.
Sometimes, she get a late lightout permissin and gets up a 5;00AM. Today she says thats he is very tired after cross country competition. I am worried that she might lose confidence. She used to be always so confident. But I heard that there are some kids who don't get hw done even at BS. am not sure if teachers at BS expect kids to complete the hws they assign everyday. Maybe it will be reasonable to assign appropriate amount of hw so that they can finish on time considering their schedules such as dorm meeting and chapel.

^ If she is loosing her confidence it wasn't really real confidence. (Please excuse my repeated words. It's bugging me, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate word choice.)

I think it's a good expeerience for her. Wait a little bit and see if things balance out. I always have a hard time with work load at the beginning of every year, and I go to public school. I'm a perfectionist who works too hard. A little after first quarter I find my niche again and don't need to work as hard. It takes a bit to adjust to the new teaching styles. That might just be her issue.

(Oh, and if you're wondering, as a public school student, why I'm posting on here, I'm applying for fall of 2009.)

More than five classes at a competitive Boarding School, particularly if they are Advanced Placement, is a significant challenge for most students. Two things are true for sure: the ability to meet the demands of homework varies greatly by the student's academic gifts (which too many BS parents and students assume are wonderful until the reality that everyone is gifted begins to sink in) and by the student's ability to discipline themselves to do homework throughout the day during free periods or down times. This last discipline, if observed, is enormously important.
