I have heard that Homework occupies most of one's day at boarding school, and all nighter's are frequent. I know this depends on school and classes, but how do you handle it coming from a school where the maximum amount of time spent on homework is half an hour? I know I can handle it but I'm nervous that I won't have any time to get other things done such as cleaning room, laundry, eating, and socialization. is there any insight on this? Any current boarding students give me an idea on the typical day and how it's spent?

Every night I do 45 mins of homework MAXIMUM. Sometimes I get home and have none at all...

I'm afraid the sudden rush will be hard for me! I also dont want to be a pariah and have my whole world occupied by reports, geometry, and Spanish conjugations.

hahah yeah same with me, i don't want to sound lazy but i don't want work to overcome other aspects of my life. and i am nervous with the transition, but i know i can handle it.

My priorities in life are...
50% family
30% social (having fun)
20% academic

This may sound idiotic but I would rather let my education suffer and be happy with many friends and a fabulous family instead of being a teen genius at Exeter with no friends and a family who I never see.

I just value a fun life more then one that is dependent on intelligence!

At my current school, I barely have any homework... I just hope I'll be able to adjust if I end up going to bs!

Your first couple weeks won't be that bad. Teachers know how hard the transition process can be, and will start off easy. They slowly increase the workload, so it won't be too much of a shock. There is plenty of time for other activities, you just have to learn how to budget your time. If you can develop a routine and stick to it, you'll be in good shape.

Homework doesn't take up my whole day by any means. I usually have between 3 and 4 hours of work, and can usually finish everything between 7 and 11. I have from 3-7 to do sports, socialize, and whatever else I want. I also take study breaks and go talk to friends or surf the web. While all nighters do happen, it's usually juniors and seniors who are pulling them. The only time I have to do this is if I write a whole paper in one night. Some students socialize more and stay up later as a result. Others are in bed by 9:30 every night, so it really depends on your habits. Things like cleaning your room or doing laundry usually occur on weekends when you have some downtime.

I am looking actually forward to more homework, but I am afraid that I won't be able to keep up with all the writing because I am totally a perfectionist with essays

I pulled an all nighter last night into today and I know at least 5 other people who did too... yeah, there's a ton of work.

What grade are you in pseud08? Is it common in all grades and what school do you go to?

ive pulled all nighters before, and i go to a public high school. my usual bedtime on school nights gets to be around 1 to 2 am because of all my homework, projects, reading assignments, and essays. i'm just worried that it's going to be even worse than this at a boarding school, if its even possible..

yeah know, i worry about this, but then i remember that its part of the bs deal. It is a prep school aka, "A school PREParing you for college"
prep alums [or whatever it is, alumnis?] say college is a breeze when they get there, because it was something they were ready for. You shouldnt be able to do 5 hours of homework in 8th grade, thats why you have to learn and practice

i'm worried about that too, i have like NOOOO homework now, it will be interesting to see what happens next year. lol.

I don't have much homework now, either.

one thing you have to remember is that at boarding school, the social, living, an academic situations are all very very blended. i think most schools will have proctored, mandatory study halls at night for freshmen (mine was from 8 to 9 30). this will really help you get a lot of stuff done. but what i meant by blending was that working on projects or math problems in the library or student center or common room becomes sort of a part of socialization, and with everyone at the school all the time, learning to manage their time, everything just...blends together.

haha i dont think i explained that very clearly. but once you go to BS you will understand!

hahaha no that was good inspiration08. im extremely nervous too, not only for the amound of homework, but just the whole new school new atmosphere and standards thing.

I've only pulled one all nighter... And it was because I was an idiot and didn't start anything until 11 and I had two BIG tests the next day.

I spent 1-2 hours for freshman, 2-3 sophmore, 3-4 junior, 1-2 senior. Including studying.

what school did you go to? and why did it go down so drastically from junior to senior?

its natural to be nervous about your new situation, but the nice thing is that your entire class is new together and no one expects you to know anything at that point!

just for perspective, junior year at boarding school is sort of universally regarded as THE HARDEST YEAR. as a sophomore, the juniors will regularly terrify you with tales of their schoolwork. it tends to drop senior year because a. you survived junior year and teachers reward this, b. you have college stuff to worry about and c. ....you're a senior.

thanks=].thats good to know

emmers....
My son is home visiting for the w/e. I passed your question on to him and he says to tell you, "It's mad chill and it's not problem at all. All you need to do is know how to manage your work load." His typical day: Classes/meetings from 8-1 with a lunch break; sports practice 1:45-4:00, work job 5-6, 6-8 (free time!), 8-10 study hall....often has to use 6-8 free time slot to do work and sometimes early morning as well...but not always. 10-10:45 chill. The schedule does vary a bit from day to day and is usually only one or two classes and a couple of meetings on Wednesdays as that is a sports competition day for bs.
