BU / BC -> M.I.T.: Does it Happen?

If you went to BC or BU for a year or two, and did really well, is it possible to be accepted as a transfer student to MIT? What colleges to MIT transfers come from usually?

I know people who transferred from Purdue and UC Santa Cruz.

Really? Do you have to have top statistics (ex. 4.0 GPA, 3 800 SAT IIs, etc.) to do that?

The guy who I actually knew had something like a 3.8 to a 4.0 at UC Santa Cruz in EECS. He ended up with a 5.0/5.0 at MIT.

I met someone in the weightroom who transferred from Purdue, but I know nothing about him, except that he majored in EECS.

If you really want to know the answer, why not contact MIT and ask them. I bet they won't answer, which tells you it is not pretty. But, my guess could be (heck, probably is) wrong, and they may give you some specifics.

I've found, in general, that offices like to talk about good news and go out of their way to hide the bad news, so use that as a guide when you ask.

Yeah I emailed them and this is what the reply was.

Hello Alex,

No we do not have a list. What I can tell you is that we look more
for the students achievements and accomplishments rather than the
college or university they may attend.

The reason I was wondering is because I have always wanted to go there, but I don't think I will get in as a freshmen (EA and/or RD) this coming year (I am a junior now). If I went to a college that was known for sending people to MIT in the past, then maybe I would have a shot as a transfer student.

Thanks for your help.

MIT is one of, if not THE, most difficult school in the nation to transfer into. you really need to be something special to go there, and they arent BSing you about caring more about ur accomplishments than the school you go to. do NOT go to a school solely so u can transfer to MIT, because, unfortunately, the odds are stacked against you.

MIT, if you wanna transfer there, you gonna have to have some skill. Transfer applications: 500...Accepted: 5.

5?!?! So....THERE'S STILL HOPE!!! Go for it.

i dont know where jthecanadian get that statistics. but it's not, definitely not 1%.
i read it's around 5-8%. and # of spots isn't set i think.

I met a guy in my dorm who transferred from GA Tech his sophomore year... but in general, MIT doesn't have a lot of transfers..

I get a feeling you'd have to be ridiculously impressive to do so. (super-high GPA and lots of honors/research)
