Grade deflation is always talked about at BU and I feel like it does exist. For example, in my chem 101 class, the average grade is a C+, leaving only a very few amount of people with A’s. Also, there are lists out there that state that BU is the one of the toughest with grading in the nation ([The 16 Colleges And Universities Hardest Schools To Earn An ?A?](http://coed.com/2013/11/15/here-are-the-16-colleges-and-universities-where-its-the-hardest-to-get-an-a/))

But don’t let that discourage you, if you work really hard, A’s are very much possible and only because you don’t get straight A’s, that does NOT mean you aren’t a hardworking/intelligent student.

I read a great explanation of grade deflation that really sums up my feelings towards this issue:

"Deflation is basically when you would normally get an A or B in a class at another school, but instead you get a B or C at BU. People do get A’s, but it’s a lot more difficult to get one in a science/engineering/math/etc class, than it would normally be. It’s for a variety of reasons, teachers sometimes curve down (they believe only a certain number of students should be getting A’s), or they make their class extremely difficult, things like that. Teachers blame it on the school, the school blames it on teachers, I think it’s a lot of both.

BU is known for having one of the worst grade deflations, so keep that in mind when comparing grades with people at other colleges."

I was in SMG, and this was not my experience. However, for my pre-med friends it was. Everything was based on a curve, and it was a frequent topic of conversation. There are previous posts about this here that you can search for.

Thank you both, hopefully it will not matter as much in CGS and COM where my D will attend

Yes, I think she will be just fine in CGS AND COM. I think it is mostly the “pre-med” course (Chemistry, etc.), and possibly some Engineering courses, where it may exist mainly. She will most likely have a lot of reading and writing in CGS (which she probably already knows); however, I have never heard anything about unfair grading or grade deflation at CGS (or COM.)
Congrats to your D and best of luck to her at BU!
