BU January Program in Boston and London

I was admitted into BU today. I was overwhelmed with happiness, because it is one of my top schools. However, there is a catch. BU admitted me into their January 2014 Boston and London program. I would enter second semester (January) at BU as a freshman for the spring and then continue my studies in London. This means, I would not start my studies in the fall.

I would be on-board with the traveling abroad aspect if it began sooner. Somehow, the idea of starting college a semester after everyone else is unnerving. I do not want to be at home watching grass grow while all my other friends are experiencing their first semester of college.

Is there any way I can stay in the College of General Studies (CGS) without starting in January? I would like to start my experience at BU in the fall.

Why dont you call the admission officer? I think they will definitely have good suggestions for you

My D is in the same "boat’ …Starting in Jan 2014… I’m not sure anyone is available now in Admission Office, due to the Spring Break…we are going to call right after in ends

Sorry but all these complaints are really annoying me, you have an extra semester to do whatever you want, start in the spring, and then spend a summer semester in London, what’s so bad about that? Hell, I wish I got that for engineering. I mean I can understand why you wouldn’t because of maybe a trip you already have planned in the summer. Regardless, I’d contact the admissions office.

Did your daughter originally apply for another school at BU, such as science, management or art? I’m just curious as to how it was decided that we (the select group of students) would start in January. I didn’t even know that this London and Boston Program was an option to Freshman. Please keep me updated with any information you find; it would be greatly appreciated.

The traveling to London part is not an issue. I’d love to travel, seeing as I’ve never been outside the states. The only thing I find unnerving is starting a semester late. I would like to have a traditional college experience, and starting in January is just something that I could not see myself doing personally.

I am in the same boat as you. BU is my top choice, and when I saw that I would start in January 2014 it made me nervous. Personally, I feel like since BU is such an amazing school that academics would have to come first before the social aspect. There will probably be many opportunities to connect with students in the CGS January program.

It’s making me very nervous. Please let me know what you decide to do and if you hear any more information regarding the subject. I hope everything works out for you. Did you originally apply to another school, or was the general school your first choice?

omg it’s just one semester late, you’re going to be on track sophomore year

yes, my daughter applied to CAS and was placed in CGS…She’s very excited, but it’s not what she wanted. We still thinking on acceptance decision, it will be a very tough one. Plus she was hoping to get a Schollarship, but no luck :-(. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I’ll be able to talk to Admissions. Thanks All!

I’m a current sophomore in CGS here at the university. I also was lucky enough to spend this past summer abroad in London on the CGS study abroad program. I wish they had this program when I was a freshman. It is an amazing opportunity and you are guaranteed to study abroad, which is usually a very competitive application process that you have to go through(only 15 students get in a semester). While it seems foreign at first, it is important to remember that you will be attending an orientation session which will help getting in the social swing of things, and during the regular spring and summer semesters you will be studying alongside other freshmen with the fall start, and there is plenty of opportunity to make friends. CGS is a very welcoming school. However, the January start isn’t something you can maneuver around, but don’t worry about sitting around watching the grass grow either. A semester off is a great opportunity to get out and do something and learn something. Most people have to end their internships at the end of a summer and you wouldn’t have to, or you could start a different internship. There are so many things to do. I completely understand your apprehension to the second semester start I would of had it as well, but I really hope you consider the program because it is a great opportunity. Well, that’s all I can think to say, and I hope this was the least bit helpful.
