BU or UMich

Okay so hey CC.

I’m trying to decide between these two schools. I am a major science weenie, I’ve done like 4 research projects these past 3 years, I’m a Siemens Semifinalist/I’ve had my research published. At this point, I will probably major in Cellular/Molecular Biology and I am definitely interested in pursuing research at the undergraduate level.

However recently, my interest has been piqued on the subject of business. Indeed this has only exacerbated the fact that I am mired in a deep pit of indecision.

BU has given me their University Scholarship(half-tuition merit), but after Campus Day, shadowing a student, and getting a tour of the Student Villages, I am left with a resounding “Meh”.

UMich has given me a modest amount of financial aid, but they have a residential research program that bestows everything that I desire for my first few years of college (living amongst my fellow science people in a fabulous dorm, doing research). Also their campus is amazing.

So um, help me internets?

I would say that you should go where you feel most at home. At the end of the day it matters where you’re going to get the best college experience, if thats UMich, then go for it.

You’re talking about over $20k a year difference in price?

I’m from Michigan. I went to law school there. My family is mostly Michigan and Stanford graduates. I lived in Ann Arbor. My living room is actually painted maize and blue, something I didn’t realize until a friend pointed it out. I would not pay that much more a year to go to Michigan.

You are intelligent and motivated. You’ll do well wherever you go. I’d call BU’s biology department, describe your concerns and see if they’ll put you in touch with someone to discuss research.

Thanks Lergnom, words of wisdom indeed!

Research at any large school varies a lot by department. I don’t know anything about your areas at BU but, for example, chemistry is a small undergrad department with a big grad program and that means research. It really varies by area.
