-Intended major is Maths, but I also want to Minor in history
-Study abroad is of huge importance to me.
-I have visited both campus and I love both
-the scholarship will relieve some financial burden on my family but it is not necessary
Go to BU & save some money. Both BU & NYU are good schools but the Presidential Scholarship is quite prestigious & will look nice on your resume.
BU study abroad is incredible. There are SO MANY options & the programs are well run. I both went on and worked for the BU London Programme & loved it. I’m happy to answer any questions you have.
Financial considerations are personal and therefore I can give little guidance on that issue. Financial considerations aside NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences is world renowned (#1 in US for applied math ahead of mit, harvard etc). Although you have been admitted to CAS, as a math major, you will also be a Courant student!
NYU is a global University and offers more international study abroad opportunities. Boston University has tremendous strengths in other areas. But for math NYU trumps most universities. In other areas BU may be stronger.
Im a BU and NYU parent.
If you want to study Math I would look to save money as an undergraduate because unless you come out with a focus in Actuarial Science odds are you are going to have to get some sort of graduate degree.
FYI I have a BS in Mathematics from SUNY Stony Brook and I am an actuary.
It has been my experience that people majoring in the same disciplines may have a general tendency to pursue certain career paths in large part do to the colleges location, emphasis, reputation, local industries in the area and student inclination. Some NYU math majors do go on to graduate and professional schools but many immediately enter the work force to work on wall street or in big data. It is my understanding that these companies actively recruit Courant–CAS students. Look at Courant’s undergraduate page (alumni) for some outcomes. Interestingly, at NYU, Stern Business and not Courant offers an actuarial emphasis. Dont hesitate to contact Wasserman or BU’s career office with any questions you have about recent employment path trends for math majors at each particular school.
Having said this BU is one of the best academic institutions in America. In addition, Boston is a mecca for post secondary education.
You are very fortunate to have these opportunities and should feel very proud of your accomplishments. Don’t stress and go with your gut feeling.
