BU specific what to bring/not bring for incoming freshman

I know there are several general threads on CC, but what about specific to BU freshman dorms? Is a printer a good idea? What about bedside table and lamp? Is there room for a desk lamp? Is it necessary, how is the lighting? My daughter will be in West, anything we need to know? How much closet/storage space is there? Any and all advice appreciated!

Don’t bring any extra lighting…there’s an overhead light and a desk light built in. If you’re in a triple with lofted beds, you might want a clip on headboard light if you like to read in bed (like I do). There’s not a ton of closet space, but it’s not bad…I never had a problem fitting my things in there. An under-the-bed storage container is usually a good idea for out-of-season clothes (and makes moving easier anyway). Definitely bring a surge protector as outlets are generally limited. Printers are a personal thing…I never had one and just used the computer labs. If you do bring one, I’d splurge and get one of the nicer ones…otherwise it could be more trouble than it’s worth replacing ink cartridges all the time.

Bringing a printer also results in all of your floor mates begging to use it all of the time. If you’re into that, fine, but it can be a headache.

I have to disagree with BUBailey. While you will have lighting provided, I think a desk lamp is a really good addition. Having less florescent lighting of your own can be a nice touch. I think most students, especially girls, do bring a desk lamp with them to supplement the BU lighting situation. I got a small one at Ikea before freshman year. That being said, a table is unnecessary. West rooms have a desk and dresser. If your daughter attends orientation, she will be staying in a room in West. That will help her see the closet situation.

I suggest getting bed risers as well. A higher bed provides nice storage space underneath as well. A printer is up to you.

I’m assuming West is just like Warren. It’s been a while since my summer orientation. Bring a lamp, definitely because if your roommate turns all of the lights off at night, you are kind of screwed. Also its very convenient for you since the top part of the desk blocks part of the light. Printers are somewhat helpful, though inconvenient because they take up a lot of space. I managed to get by printing at the dorm mailroom and at SMG. If you not from closeby, try not too bring too much stuff especially if you are flying because when it comes time to move out, its really messy. Students also tend to buy a lot of stuff like clothes and some non-essentials, so you will ALWAYS leave with more than you came with.

7" bed risers are nice. my room mate got those 25" inch ones and those were crazy tall. i think desk lights are great, esp if your room mate is sleeping but you want to study - it’s a nice little light. A hanger jewelery organizer is really nice ( [Amazon.com: Household Essentials 01943 Ultra 80-Pocket Hanging Jewelry Organizer: Home & Garden](http://www.amazon.com/Household-Essentials-01943-80-Pocket-Organizer/dp/B0010XX7ZQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1306959452&sr=8-3) ) also, a toiletry drawer is also nice ( [Amazon.com: InterDesign Rain 3 Drawer Large Box, Clear: Home & Garden](http://www.amazon.com/InterDesign-Rain-Drawer-Large-Clear/dp/B004U4NPX6/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1306959486&sr=1-4) ). you are not technically supposed to have water boilers but a lot of people sneak them in and it’s super convenient for tea, instant noodles and many other things. air wick is also nice. hooks for towels that you can put on the walls. i’m just listing things here, sorry.

You don’ really need a printer. You can always borrow from a friend and there’s free printing at the computer labs in the COM building (right next to Warren, near CAS). Also you get 100 free sheets to print per semester. If you print double sided that’s considered 1 sheet. After that it’s 5 or 10 cents per sheet but it’s not that bad, I actually didn’t even use up all of my 100 sheets.

And like Versii said you will always leave with more things than you came with. As a college student you get a ton ton ton of free things and of course buy things on the way. Also since it’s still pretty cold after winter break you can’t even really bring all your winter clothes back home with you for break =/
