Just reading through our Financial Account to make sure we were all up-to-date and saw the line item for Medical Insurance for $1412 for the semester. Did I miss something when this was discussed at Orientation or information sent home? I see that we can sign a waiver, but am wondering if other students use this plan. It seems to be a comprehensive year round Aetna based plan. Thanks!

I'm still on my parents plan. Everyone I know is still on their parents plans but some people are on it. I imagine it helps out international students who's coverage may not transfers well, or people that just don't have their own insurance. I don't think it's really better than most insurance policies.

DS (a May BU grad) was on our family health insurance plan. He waived the fee every year. I believe you can do the waiver online.

It's just such a surprise to see it as a line item on our bill rather than being asked if we want it or not!

haha why would they ask? they wanna get as much money out of you as possible. the sports pass and fitrec membership are also optional and can be dismissed

It's required by Massachusetts' law that all undergraduate students have some form of health insurance, so normally colleges and universities give you insurance by default. $1412 is pretty expensive, BC charges only $900, but its co-pay is very high, almost makes you sick just looking at it. My friends from other universities try to weasle out of the required insurance even if they don't have their own insurance, it's just too damn expensive.

We take the health insurance because our California HMO is not applicable in Massachusetts. It depends on your situation.
