I just finished my freshman year at a small private college in Massachusetts. I am a biology major. I hate it there, and I'm lonely and I just feel out of place. But, they give a lot of money to me. I applied for transfer to Boston University and I got accepted. The problem is, they only gave me $5000 for the first year, and altogether, I'm expecting to pay $173,000 until graduation. BU offers better opportunities in biology, more diversity, and it's a better school overall compared to the school I am at now.

So, my current school is affordable but BU is outrageously expensive. BU is a happier place for me and offers a better education. What should I do?

I just recently transferred OUT of BU… Go with your heart, but I don’t think BU is worth the hefty price. Cliché to say, but true, college is what YOU make out of it. The education and opportunities at BU can be found anywhere else with an urban setting. BU was great socially, but it remains one of my biggest regrets for going there. There is a true lack of intimacy in education at BU. I recommend to attend your state school.

Think of your undergraduate degree as an investment. $173,000 for a school that can only boast its urban setting? Really sit down and ask yourself this.

I would likely not go to BU. That is a lot of money that I’m assuming you would be taking it out in loans. I guess it depends on the person but I’m a worrier. And I know that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy myself at school worrying about it AND I’d take a job I disliked just to pay off that money… Have you looked into possibly appealing the fin aid decision? No harm in asking and though it’ll still not compare to your current school, maybe you can shave off a couple thousand a year?
