BU vs Emerson College

Urgent - Having a hard time deciding between these two.

Which college is better for communications (namely, print journalism)?

Which college is better for film production?

Boston University:
I'm planning on double majoring in journalism and film production in college. I've heard, but not officially or from any real 'worthy' sources, that BU has a better communications dept - one of the best in the nation.

However, BU's film dept does not allow students to start actual production and working with a camera until their junior year. How important are those years of general electives?

Emerson College:
This school is focused primarily on communications and the arts. But does this mean their journalism and film departments are good/better than BU?

I'm in a real crunch to decide which one to attend, because the financial aid deadline for Emerson is due very, very, very soon. I'd like to become a filmmaker after college, but studying journalism is a real important endeavor to me.

I'm really unsure as to which school to choose, though I am leaning a bit towards Emerson because its curriculum seems to fit my educational preference - basing this off my k-12 career, I tend to pursue my own interests (which isn't restricted to journalism or film, if that's what may be implied) and am currently rather bored with having to spend time in the math, science and language courses I am taking for my senior year (that doesn't mean I hate any of them.)

uh no one knows?

Are you able to visit both schools? Ideally, the visits would answer all your questions. What kind of environment do you want? BU: 18,000 students, Emerson: 3,000 Film? You can’t do better than Emerson. On our tour, they told us you can be involved with hands-on experience as early as your freshman year. The students we met on our tour were passionate and involved in their work. My opinion is that in a large school such as BU, you wouldn’t have as many opportunities to be truly involved in film making or journalistic endeavors until your later years in school. If you can’t visit, at least spend some time exploring both websites and read as much as you can about both programs each school offers. Good luck with your decision- Boston is a great college city no matter where you attend!

I was also choosing between BU and Emerson for Marketing PR & Advertising and what it really comes down to is personal preference. BU was wayyy too big for me, and though their COM program is top-notch, you really can't beat Emerson's specialization and one-on-one education. Plus, like you said, you don't have to take a lot of lib arts classes at Emerson--they get you busy in your major from day one.

I visited BU's COM twice for advertising and was not impressed. BU's so large, and it seemed disorganized. I also felt BU lacked all of the home-y touches Emerson has -- the warm, inviting colors and unique small finishes (like the gorgeous stairs/railings in the Walker building). Plus, I too want to start in on classes in my field and organizations day 1 and not wait until junior year.

I'm sure you'll do well at either college though. Good luck!

thanks for all your replies.

Now I'd like everyone to forget my previous statements, and help me with this question:

How does BU COM's school, specifically journalism, compare with Emerson's? I've been reading and hearing that BU's COM is one of the best in the nation, 2nd only to Syracuse's Newhouse. How does Emerson compete with this, how is their program different?

Emerson is a lot smaller, more hands-on and specialized. Emerson’s style of learning really works for some people but not others. Emerson does things their own way.

BU is more like a traditional J-school but all of the professors and opportunities are top notch. I think BU gives you better opportunities post-graduation. They have a lot of connections.

I was considering both but liked BU better. Emerson just felt weird to me. But everyone has different needs, and you’d honestly be fine either way because both are top notch. It’s just my opinion, but I like BU better for Journalism overall though.
