BU vs. uc santa barbara

I just got accepted off of BU’s waitlist and now I am torn between the two. I am from Massachusetts so BU is close to home, but UCSB would be a completely new experience. My major is linguistics, but that is not set in stone. I am nervous that at UCSB the only thing to do is go out and get drunk. While I do like to party, I don’t like to do it all of the time. I feel like BU has more options because it is right in Boston. Help!

i’m in the same dilemma…
it’s either BU or UCSD, and i live in NJ. I am comfortable in boston and i know that i will have an awesome 4 years at BU. I applied to the UC’s in hopes of getting into LA or Berkeley, but i got sd instead. visited SD twice (yes…twice) but it never really “wowed” me with anything. visited BU multiple times (gf goes there) and i absolutely love boston. the only pull that ucsd has on me is ‘california’, biomed, neuroscience, and med school.

u both sound like ud prefer to be in boston

i would prefer boston, however US news convinces my parents against that. i don’t blame them, and BU is really expensive too

Small world. I swear the east is just the opposite of the west (no pun intended). I got accepted to BU and UCSB as well and I’m from So Cal. I decided to choose BU because of the new experience. Although I don’t know you each individually, I would encourage all of you to try and experience something new. California is a great place. Every state has its good and bads BUT I would like to emphasize the fact that Cali is the only place where you can ski/board, skate, and surf all in one day! And to whaler4644, UCSB does have a notorious reputation to be this crazy party college and while it CAN be, there are just as many who don’t like to party as those who do. I’ve been there and it is a gorgeous campus but there isn’t a big city surrounding it. It’s just something completely new. You won’t be leaving your friends or your family. You’ll get to meet new people and then can say in the future “I’ve been there. It was awesome.” If you’re truly unhappy, then you can always transfer after a semester or two but I doubt that’ll happen if you come. Best of luck to all of you! Class of '13 :D

If you are on the east coast, then you would probably like UCSB. If you haven’t visited the campus itself, the campus is absolutely amazing. Its very, very social, but still filled with intelligent people. if I were from the east coast, I would like to go to SB for a new experience.
