Budget cuts: How have you been impacted?

To all ucla students: How have the budget cuts affected you? Larger classes, cut classes? less financial aid?

cut classes…it seems to be that all the easy profs and easy classes are disappearing like the wind

It hasn’t really affected the school of engineering at all.

More Hispanic pride and the right to illegal immigration rallies. Increasingly vocalized liberal student groups. Several thousand dollars more tacked onto tuition. That’s about it.

It’s hard to say you miss something you’ve never had. I’m sure the seniors and juniors see a real difference. To me, it seems to be always this way.

I do I notice more students (trying to) transfer cause of costs and complaining about public education (though that’s not necessarily related to budget cuts).

I’m a junior! I see no difference. -.-

I find the budget cuts completely hyped.

A couple classes canceled here and there. Minor inconveniences at worst.

Wow are you guys serious? Here, I’ll tell you my experience:

Today in History 151E, it was my turn to run on the treadmill. The reason we have a treadmill is because our building, Bunche, is no longer supplied with electricity thanks to the budget cuts. Therefore, we need to generate our own power to keep the class lights and powerpoint on. Thankfully, we only have class once a week for 1 hour because our professor refuses to teach anymore than once a week for 1 hour due to his pay cut; again, thanks to budget cuts.

After class I skateboarded down Bruinwalk, but fell flat on my face because there was a humungous crack in front of Bruin Plaza. Again, thanks to budget cuts, the school’s cement floors can no longer be repaired from the weekly 8.9 magnitude earthquakes in Los Angeles.

Today when I ate at a dining hall, De Neve to be specific, I waited 1.5 hours in line just to get my burrito and taco dish because there is only 1 dining hall open on campus now thanks to budget cuts and there is only one food item per month. This month’s theme is Mexican. Also, I was very annoyed by the chef who served me my taco because she was really rude, especially since she didn’t even speak English. Oh I forgot to mention, the entire kitchen staff has been replaced with day workers because UCLA can no longer afford to keep a culinary staff. Courtesy of budget cuts.

When I went back to my dorm, I tried to take a nap, but the hay kept poking my neck and I just gave up. A few months ago our dorm mattresses were replaced by stacks of hay because apparently ORL (office of residential life) allocated most of its funds to the renovation of Pauley Pavilion. This was actually the athletic department’s fault because they ran out of money (again, budget cuts) and they needed to transfer funds from somewhere.

Last, but not least, I’ve been seeing a lot of tourists recently taking photos at the UCLA Bruin statue and throwing coins and putting dollar bills in its mouth. This was actually pretty recent. According to the Daily Bruin, Chancellor Gene Block needed ways to raise money so he notified Asian monks that the Bruin Bear is actually a God and gives good luck and helps couples make babies if they throw money at it. It’s not a bad idea, but it adds to the already overcrowded campus we have.

Speaking of overcrowding, I have to stop typing. I barely have room to move my fingers to type in Covel Commons. It’s the only study lounge open on campus and there’s over 200 in this room, even though the capacity is 85.

lol that was pretty creative actually
