Budget cuts swell class sizes at UW

700 students in intro to bio class. It is bigger than most highschool graduating classes! Read on... I have been in Kane Hall before. You need binocular to see anything on stage :(

is that Kane 120? damn i didn’t even realize there was a top up there.

Yes, I think so. At this rate they will have to use multiple halls there and use closed circuit TV. Ugh!

nvm 120 only has a 440 capacity and no balcony, no wonder i never noticed that haha. that’s 130.

I read the article, it was depressing. One thing that occurred to me is that this is how the biology department chose to respond to the budget cut, no one told them this is how the changes had to be made. It might have been a better idea to make some changes in the upper division courses rather than such a drastic move in an introductory course.

At one point in the article they mentioned students grading each other’s work. I didn’t have to grade someone else’s work past junior high school. That’s not really the kind of thing that should happen at a university.

I wonder how much longer it will be until the students are just told to download the podcast?

@ gimmel I feel the same way as you do. I don’t know how many of these large classes one is forced to take. If it is more than 2 classes during the 4 year period then it is not that bad. However, if most of first year classes are this way then UW is not worth attending.
Large classes could end up becoming major hurdles towards getting into desired program.

I get the feeling that they really want more students attending UW Bothell/Tacoma and large classes at Seattle campus will force students to move to these campuses.

I am told that if you get into honors program then class sizes rarely exceed 50. That is my best hope.

gimmel and Maxxwell, I’m glad to hear that you feel this way. This move by the biology department says clearly that they don’t care about their freshmen undergraduate students. A class size of 700 is absurd, and you’re right, it is much worse than a class size of 200.

If enough students like yourselves go elsewhere becuase of this then maybe the biology department will wake up and realize that they’ve gone too far. A lot of really good students attend the UW and they shouldn’t be treated like this.

i’m sorry but it’s not a good idea to choose not to go here because one biology class has 700 people in it. 1) it’s ONE class 2) it’s a lecture, i mean what is really the differenvce between 200 and 1000 in a lecture session. the whole point of lecture is to give a large amount of people the information. now if this class did not have a quiz section i would be wary of taking it, but it does.

get there early and grab a front seat  700 people in one class though… thats larger than my entire high school.

spaceneedle hit the nail on the head. what is the difference between 200 and 700? there are quiz sections and plenty of outside resources.
