Budget Cuts

I'm getting very nervous about the budget cuts. I can't wait for the town hall meeting. The email my student received wasn't very reassuring about my investment. Anyone else out there with the same concerns?

Do you mean the quality of your student's education?

Also the economic factors affecting USC and its budget hold equally true for just about every educational institution out there -- so most schools will need to tighten their belts one way or the other.

Does this mean oos apllicants who will be paying full tuition may have a better chance at acceptance??? HMMMM

My D hasn't said anything about getting an email. What did the email say?

I hope this link directs you to the email. There is alot of information on the USC website. Yes, I'm concerned about the quality of my daughter's education. I hope the town meeting will ease my mind. That is a major task at hand on how to deal with such a huge cut in funds. I don't want to see good teachers leave. I'm also concerned about my student's program of study and if it will be cut.

University of South Carolina

Concerns stated in Post #6 are valid concerns; the University of Wisconsin just went through a few years of profs leaving for better pay elsewhere. Also small classes will be reduced or, possibly, eliminated at USC. Hopefully this will not affect the Honors College, but it probably will. Does anybody have up to date info. regarding the size & availability of honors courses?

My D is in the Honors College and so far she has not been notified of any changes to her Spring 2009 schedule which contains 3 honors classes.

This is a good overview of the situation:

Agreed. Penn State University is very, very concerned about the second round of budget cuts. They realize this could affect the quality of a "Penn State Education". We are not alone in SC. The good students will rise to the occasion and make the best out of a difficult situation. U of SC continues to offer many unique opportunities and programs for students. As always, our kids will probably handle this better than their parents!

The Honors College doesn't seem to have been affected. The availability of courses and their class sizes seems the same as usual for the spring; in fact, the Honors College and the Poli Sci department even helped a group of us start a class that will be taught this upcoming semester. In addition to classes staying the same, the Honors College has kept providing substantial financial help for students' research and study abroad efforts.
