Budgeting

I'm going to start budgeting my money, for food, etc.

For the past year, I've never denied myself anything ranging from something I want to buy or clothes or even food. Last semester, I spent $400 primarily on food in the last 3 weeks of school. It's ridiculous in retrospect.

Currently I'm allotting myself $50 a week for food; I think I could get this down even more. Any of you guys out there budget? How much do you budget per week, month? Is everything effectively going as planned for you?

My boyfriend and I split $200 a month for food for two separate residences, so that ends up being about $25 per week- we eat SUPER cheap. That’s about all we spend regularly. I allot $20 a month or so for additional expenses. I live in a dorm, though, so really all I need are food and toiletries, so it’s not that bad. That’s just about the only money I have to spend, so it’s not too hard to keep to my budget.

Are you living in dorms or an apartment? Are you on a meal plan? Do you like to cook? Do you have a full kitchen? It really depends on what sort of “food” your doing and the kind of “eating” you’re accustomed to. And yes, $400 in three weeks is ridiculous.

My boyfriend and I have a weekly grocery store competition when buying groceries. We see how many meals/essential food items we can buy for $50 (each). He makes a list beforehand and I go off of what’s on sale. Since he has a list, we don’t duplicate. Having the added competition factor helps keep me on budget (b/c who wants to lose due to breaking the rules).
