Buffalo Pharmacy School

Hey. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Buffalo's pharmacy school. I got into their Early Assurance program, is it hard to maintain a 3.5 GPA in order to guarantee admission to the pharmacy school? Is the environment competitive? How respectable is the school compared to other pharmacy schools in the area?

The school is very respectable, they only admit about 11% of those who apply every year. Every freshmen who gets accepted into Buffalo as a pharmacy major is in early assurance, the problem is staying in it. I came in as an undecided major and I know that about 25% of those in early assurance already dropped out after 1 semester. Getting the 3.5GPA isn't as hard as people make it up here. The key is doing good in the easier classes (only math/science count towards pharmacy GPA). The only really difficult class all around is Cell Biology, across the board about 30% of all people who take the class fail. If you decide to go to Buffalo, I can tell you what teachers are easier. Evolutionary Bio really hinges on the teacher you get.

Do you need anything in addition to the 3.5 GPA like reccommendations, etc.? What classes are you required to take freshmen year? Is the school well integrated into Buffalo or is it isolated from the main campus? Thanks!

somagreen, if i may ask, when did you receive early assurance notice?
i also applied to as a pharm major, and I had pretty good stats so i was sort of expecting early assurance as well...
also, is early assurance given exclusively to UB honors students? did you get scholarship notice as well?

sl88-EVERYONE who is accepted into UB as a freshmen pharmacy major is in early assurance. Unless you're a transfer student or not a freshman, you are in early assurance (it's not given only to honor students).

I was a little confused about pharmacy early assurance. I got the acceptance letter but it didn't mention early assurance so I emailed them about it and they told me I was in. I haven't received any scholarship info. Does anyone know when that comes out? What type of scholarships does UB give?

Yeah, everyone who gets accepted to UB as a pharmacy major is automatically put in early assurance. Scholarship info. should have already been given if you got one. The minimum is at least a 1200SAT (old) so whatever the equivalent to that is in the new SAT.

I got a letter about being selected for UB Scholars Program. Got $1500 in merit aid for 4 yearrs.

Scholarships are as follows:

UB Scholars (1200+SAT and 90GPA) is $500-$2,500
UB Honors (1300+SAT and 93GPA, separate application) is $2,500-$5,000

$500 increments separate each different scholarship

My SAT is 2180 and was notifed as a UB Scholar with 2500 for four years. Will I be considered as UB Honor later? Thanks for any reply!

Unfortunately, they consider Honors and scholars at the same time, so if you were put in scholars, you'll stay in scholars. Once at UB, you can't get higher scholarships or be admitted into the honors program (honestly, you get no additional perks).

If i'm in the early assurance program for Pharmacy, do i still have to take the Pcats?

My son is considering pharmacy. What is the early assurance program? Are you guaranteed to remain in the program for the 6 years if you maintain the gpa? Also what other pharmacy schools did you guys apply to?

Anyone who declares prepharm in their application is qualified for the early assurance program. They try to register these kids during the summer at the same time, so they start to meet each other right away. My older kid tried prepharm at SUNY Buffalo, but was one of the kids who changed majors 1st semester. The chem and bio classes were "weed out" classes -- not impossible, since some of the kids do maintain that 3.5 and move on, but definitely not easy. The classes grade on a curve. He said you still have to apply for entry into the program, but that if you were prepharm and met the 3.5 you're assured admission. I don't know if SUNY now requires the PCATs too, but they didn't for his class. Of the group that he met at his prepharm registration, only 1 is going on with the program. Some couldn't get the 3.5, and others decided to pursue other majors. The pharm school has a good reputation.

My high school senior got into Pitt, Toledo (they only take pharm apps from Toledo students, which improves the odds of getting in), UCONN (a new program restricts their pharm apps to students who have studied at UCONN for a year) and Duquesne (now no longer a 0-6 guarantee). He likes Toledo and went to their pharm camp last year, but SUNY's early assurance deal was too good to pass up. He'll need to get a 3.2 freshman yr and a 3.5 sophomore yr to stay in Honors, which is a good motivator. He's getting really excited about SUNY now that he made his final decision!

I have may friends in Pharmacy and Early assurance does not assure acceptance, even if all requirements are meet. You may think that you are garenteed acceptance after the seond year, thogh I have4 frieneds who have 4.0 gpas and alot of extra cirriculars and some even being pharmacy techs, all still denied, so be warened by a UB student, early assurance does not assure anything.

It takes alot to get in.
