Hi there guys, I thought I’d make an official thread for the 2016 Buick Achievers Scholarship Program. I won the scholarship back in 2014 and I’ve helped some of my friends win the scholarship too. I can provide free tips and help for how to win this scholarship, considering that they receive over 8000 applications a year.
Hi, I PMed you about this
what is it based on? community service? grades?
Please share your insight. Thanks.
It’s based more on leadership-based scholarship that stresses on diversity and strong financial need.
Is there a certain income bracket in order to be eligible to apply?
I didn’t know about it before this post but I just started it .
@scholarwinner Are you still reading this thread? My son was sent an email from them today. Do you have to fill out the CSS or FAFSA to apply? Do you know if there are SAT and GPA thresholds? He has one community service involvement that has racked up over 400 hours throughout high school plus he’s a leader in other EC’s. Is it rude (since you are anonymous on the internet) to ask how much you were awarded? TIA.
I am not sure of the specific thresholds for SAT, GPA, or Income but I would assume it’s 2100, 3.8 or higher GPA, and $30,000 for income. I was awarded $25,000 for every year until graduation. You need to fill out a FAFSA.
is $50k for family of 6 within income range? Also I’m interested in STEM major but not particularly sure what exact field I’m going into (the scholarship stresses involvement in automotive field). I applied as a mechanical engineer at my schools though, but I’m just not set on doing automotive like the scholarship is implying.
Also how many essays do you have to write for the scholarship?
@archlion two very short essays. I just did them. Also, mechanical engineering is an acceptable major. I’m going into biomed eng with a double major in comp sci, so I chose comp sci for my acceptable major.

Uh, no. No no no.
I know multiple winners with SAT scores well below that “threshold”. There are no thresholds other than the eligibility requirements. Please do not mislead people.
Before I apply, how much of a factor is parental income for this scholarship? My parents make over $30K, but I don’t want my choice to go out-of-state to cause any burden given they have to put my brother through college as well.
@samlan16 just apply anyway. It’s not a terribly hard application, and maybe the info you put in “extraneous financial information” will be significant in evaluating your need…A scholarship like this is worth a shot! So just apply and see what happens.
I really cannot reiterate enough how important it is to ignore the above post about “thresholds”. Those are NOT the thresholds. Period. You are fine and very much eligible if your parents make more than 30k.
The poster pulled those “thresholds” out of his butt (I assume based on his own situation), to be frank.
Sorry for the late response,. Been MIA. You’re right, there aren’t really any “thresholds” I believe. Those were just stats I assumed would have the best shot at winning the scholarship. iI apologize for any misleading information that I may have provided.
My family makes a decent amount of money (over $100K a year). Should I even bother with this scholarship or is my income too high to be considered?
For this one, too high. Buick very strongly considers financial situations. My family AGI was several tens of thousands of $ lower than yours, and I wasn’t considered despite winning more competitive national scholarships.
Am I still eligible if I am “undecided” at my accepted university?
Yes.
