Bumping into your high school classmates in college?

In my high school, USC and NYU are the most popular schools that students choose to go to. i think there are like 8 people who went to each of those two schools in last year's graduating class. i am also quite interested in going, so I'm wondering what's the chance of me bumping into people from my old school if I go there. And what are the chances i would share a dorm with them or have class with them?

THANKS!

Judging by this post, your chances of even getting into those two schools is questionable.

^ that was mean…he’s just asking a question

well I go to NYU and 9 students from my HS class went there - yet I rarely bump into them around campus! there’s about 50,000 students in the whole university, and about 5,000 for each class. there is no enclosed campus, so that makes it even harder to run into people. None of my old classmates are sci majors so I’ve never seen them in classes. I occasionally run into them in the library, bookstore, coffee shops, around campus, dining hall, parties, etc, and we say hi and make friendly small talk, but we’re not really friends. Chances are that if you don’t click with someone in a small HS class, you’re not going to be best friends with them in a huge college class. I heard that 2 of my old HS classmates just transferred in, but i haven’t even seen them yet. It is likely some will be in your dorm building, but every building has hundreds of students so you might not run into them much at all.

I don’t know much about USC, but I know it’s smaller than NYU and has an enclosed campus so that might mean running into old classmates is more common.

I go to a midwest state school w/ about 25k undergrads, and probably 25-30 kids from my HS class go to school here. Some came directly from HS, others after 2 years of CC. I see one every day–same major, the rest I see maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I’ve made new friends since HS and don’t really have any reason to hang out with people from HS. If I see them on campus it’s usually a quick Hey, what’s up, etc. I don’t avoid them, but don’t go out of my way to plan my life around seeing them either.

Thanks guys. I’m just quite curious about college life and stuff. Sounds good.

Nearly 200 kids from my high school go to my U. I see them once in a while, say hi and just keep walking.

collegefever101-Since you are so curious about college life why don’t you plan weekend visits at different campuses and stay with friends who are already enrolled at those schools?

I dont live in the US. So I can’t go to ‘weekend trips’ to colleges to check out the college life.

Hahaha…that’s nothing.
In my high school, out of a graduating class of about 700, roughly 550 students end up at Rutgers. And you rarely see any of your high school classmates, unless you choose to dorm with them or you’re just really good friends and hang out a lot.

8 kids from your school at USC or NYU?
You may never see them again.

Unless you’re in the same major as them, the chances aren’t that big. I don’t see too many of my friends from my first year unless we call each other up and meet each other that way. They’re all bio majors and I’m an engineering major so their schedules are different from mine and I’m in a different area from them.

I think there were 10-15 people from my graduating class that ended up going to my school. It’s a pretty large state school, so it’s nice to see a familiar face every so often in a sea of strangers. A casual wave or a nod and a smile is usually all that occurs.

I tend to see more people from way back when like elementary/middle school or previous year’s classes than my graduating class and that’s always a nice little surprise.
