Bus system, dorms, etc.

S is trying to decide between KU and another midwest school and we have a few questions for any current or former students/parents. How efficient is the bus system? Is it a pain that gets old quickly? Unfortunately, the day we visited was VERY stormy (snow, sleet, wind!) and everyone looked miserable at the bus stops. I'm sure many more kids walk during normal weather, we're just trying to get a feel for the bus system and how much it is used. The campus seemed much more spread out than we expected.

Is Oliver dorm out of the way or do kids like the location, and how is the dining hall there? We saw Templin, Hashinger and Mrs. E's but didn't get into Oliver. Is it tough tackling that hill every time you leave your room? How is the Rec Center?

Any insights into campus life at KU would be greatly appreciated. Congrats on the bball win!

Hi there my-3-sons!
It seems that the 2 of us are the only ones on cc who are interested in KU!
However I wouldnt be able to answer any of your questions as I will be attending KU fall 08. Im an international student and will be majoring in aerospace engineering. What about your s?

I graduated from KU quite a while ago, but I may be able to give some insight on the location of Oliver and the rest of the campus. In my freshman year, I lived in Naismith Hall which is right across the street from Oliver. I walked to all of my classes and there was never a need to take the bus.

I hear the west campus is more developed these days and am not sure if a lot of people have classes there. If so, then I can see the need for taking a bus to class. All of my classes were on the main campus and there were no issues at all with walking up hills. The biggest hill is the one from the football stadium up to the Campanile. Walking from Oliver to classes shouldn't be bad at all. You could also ride a bike.

Oliver is in a great location. It is very close to the recreation center, which was very nice when I attended. It had basketball courts, racquetball, and a swimming pool. Oliver is also real close to Allen Field House. You will easily be able to attend all of the home basketball games there! There isn't a more exciting place than Allen Field House to watch a game.

adso-Glad to hear there is another possible new student here. My s is also intersted in engineering. He intended to study mechanical, but lately has talked of the possibility of civil.

Jedediah-Thanks so much for the info. I've spoken with another parent and her s's experience seems to echo yours. I'm glad to hear that the bus will not be necessary. S was very excited to see the proximity of Oliver to Allen Field House and the Rec Center.
