I was accepted to both UCSD (Econ) and UCSB (BusEcon) for the fall. I'm pretty excited and although I know I can't go wrong with either schools, since both belong to the well known UC system, I do admit that I am having a tremendous amount of trouble deciding where I should pursue my college studies. From what I've read in numerous publications, UCSD generally has a better academic rep. Also, they are ranked higher than UCSB in USN&WR. However, I believe UCSD is better known for their med and bio programs. BusEcon is one of the more popular majors at UCSB and I believe they are known for their emphasis in accounting under that major. I live roughly in between those schools so distance is not a factor and I would be living near the campus I ultimately decide on. They both have excellent campuses in beautiful locations, so I can't go wrong either way. I've heard the numerous nicknames for UCSB and know it has the stigma of a "party school", but this does not concern me as I feel pretty confident I can balance academics with socializing. Does UCSD have a strong Economics dept? Does UCSB for the matter, or is the BusEcon major filled with those that couldn't hack it in the sciences? Any opinions on the matter would greatly be appreciated. Thanks and congrats to all who have been accepted to their respective colleges!

if you wanna do accounting, go to ucsb. if you wanna do investment banking or anything finance related, go to ucsd. going to ucsd will not guaranteee anything, although your chances are better at ucsd than at ucsb. investment banking companies generally don't recruit at ucsd and certainly not at ucsb. ucsd has the better name, but you can't go wrong with either.

Well, if you want an almost 100% guarantee of getting a job before you graduate you should pick UCSB for Bus. Econ. w/ emphasis in Acctng. Two of my friends finished thier degree requirements in March and were offered Accting jobs by the Big 4 Acctng firms last December. The Big 4s are actively recruting students on campus.

I faced the same dillema when I was accepted to UCSD and UCSB. It all came cown to Econ or Bus. Econ w acctng. If you get a degree in Econ you're most certainly need to get to grad school to do well financially. Accountants are very much in demand right now. Both my friends were offered $50-54K per year. Not bad if you're a fresh graduate. Then your value as an accountant would skyrocket when you get your Certified Public Accountant license.

FYI, 40% of CEOs were accountants. Reason behind their fast promotions is that accountants are the only people that have access to the whole company and not just one department. So you get to meet the big men in the company and they're more likely to notice your potentials.

even ucla and usc don't have job prospects that good. is this near 100% guarantee something the econ dept announces?? if they do, they didn't while i was there. i knwo this much; each of the big 4 picks up rougly 15-20 ucsb accouting grads/year and there are several hundred accouting grads per year. there are some that get picked up by the smaller firms too, but the big 4 hires a bulk of those that do get jobs. ucsb is not usc or ucla. dream on.

where does it say that 40% of CEOs were accountants?? I know a substantial percentage of CEOs are IVY league grads or from other prestigious private universities. Those universities tend not to grant accounting degrees.

wrathletik, if you want to do accouting, then you should go to ucsb over ucsd.

wellendowed, i never claimed that i was smarter. i felt you were misrepresenting ucsb to wrathletik. actually, you were straight out lying. you were the one who made the 40% of ceos are accountants claim. YOU prove it! otherwise, it's just an old wives tale.

oh, and i belong at ucla. my ucla gpa is actually higher than my ucsb gpa, which wasn't too shabby. atmosphere and competition do wonders for your study habits. btw, do YOU have a job lined up?

With my GPA I'm sure I'll get hired by the big 4. I have a summer internship lined up for Ernst & Young this summer which will ultimately lead to getting hired by them when I'm done with my degree requirements.

I just read the CEO stats online....only 11% of CEOs graduated from IV League..I suppose that percentage is pretty "substantial" for you.

And please, why would I mislead anyone? What do I get from it? I'm a proud Gaucho and my education here has been great. Though I was rejected by UCLA as you were during freshman in no way will I transfer to UCLA. That's what happens when you only think about prestige. A UCSB diploma and a hot face is all it takes to get hired by the Big 4.....did I mention my 3.6 GPA? lol

I'm not JC transfer. I've been here since freshman! My cousin found out about CC through the search engine and started looking into the UC after he was sent home from Westpoint for medical reason. I don't want to register so I'm using his acct which he no longer uses.

I'm pretty confident about my looks, abilities, charisma, and my grades. They'll hire me for sure with just a wink ;)

Also, there are JC students who are smart so don't talk -- about them. I wish I went to JC so I wouldn't have to pay $20k extra. Do you know there are tons of JC students at UCLA? lol

how convenient that you admit that you are a JC transfer then claim that it was your cousin. admit it , you are a JC transfer to UCSB!!

i can tell by your grammar that you are asian. i know that the vietnamese have no regard for the tenses(past/present/future).

okay, throw your false "statistics" around and see where that'll get you. that gets you fired in the real world. but i'm sure you're gonna give good head this summer so that won't be a problem.

"What's the difference between UCLA and UCSB? Asians...... lot's of smart asians at UCLA."

you are right. all the smart asians are at UCLA, and you and other not so smart asians are at UCSB. hahahha you set youself up with that.

Don't post offensive stuff about UCSB in a UCSB forum please. No one cares that you go to UCLA.. the end. Which school is "better" is entirely subjective and not worth a pointless argument. Thanks.

sixthbatter - I don't see why you attacked wellendowed even if you think his ideas are inaccurate.

I assume these two sites would help with his argument. His point was simply that there is a growing number of CEOs that are accountants. Your arrogance in response to his statement is disgusting. A man's character is not judged by his wealth/education/GPA, and UCLA obviously has not been a great benefit to your poor attitude. Do you really think that he is trying to lie? His stories about his friends are obviously true, and a school name does not mean anything in the long run. School pride is understandable, but an average intelligence hard worker can succeed from the worst community college with enough motivation. Besides, have you ever heard of a top executive bragging about his college? What exactly are you offended by since you agree that there is no wrong choice anyways?

wrathletik - I'm not the best advisor in this field, but I should ask my cousin because I believe he is an economics major from UCSB. I would look more into detail into both program specifics since that helped me to appreciate my (different) choice more fully. Isn't the SIR deadline over? =X

What an ignroant thing to say. Vietnamese do have regard for tenses. The Vietnamese language containes a wide and complicated list of tense markers. How vietnamese indicates tense is different than English, but we still do indicate tense.

Now back to the thread. I say if you want to go into Accounting go to UCSB, it is up their with UCLA, and UCB for accounting.
