I've finally narrowed my list of choices down to either UCSB or UCSD. Students who have chosen to attend UCSB please post WHY you made that decision. Current UCSB students please post why I should choose UCSB over UCSD. I would really appreciate everyone's honest opinions..

well, just look at this site.
Students in SB are the happiest ones.

Hi Natasha,

I have the same dilemma and there are a number of reasons I am probably going to attend SB over SD. First, SD does not have my major and is more of a science school (I want to be a business econ major). Therefore, most of the major accounting firms do not recruit down at SD. Second of all, the social environment at SB seems to be more spirited and lively than SD's. Lastly, I love the summer start program and the idea of getting to know other students and the campus before regular school actually starts.

I hope this helps and good luck with your choice, as they are both great schools! :)

I'm a current UCSB student. It's really funny how tough it is to choose between UCSB and UCSD. I faced the same dillema lastyear. But it was mainly the major(Bus.Econ/accting) at UCSB that made me decide to enrol here.

So far I'm having a blast here at UCSB. I don't party much but definitely know when to socialize. The business econ /accting program is awesome. Although there are a lot of high achievers in all my classes, they're not very competitive to the point of not sharing their notes like at UCLA or Berkeley.

I'm sure you're going to have a great time here at UCSB.

I like SB because it is the true college experience. Although SB itself isn't a "college town," Isla Vista is. Growing up in a college town, I love the idea of being surrounded by all students, and things geared towards students. All high school, I thought I'd apply to both SB and SD, then make my choice, but in the end, I didn't even apply to SD. I'm not a big city person, and SD is a big city. And honestly, the parties are important to me. I work hard to play hard, and I know people at SB socialize a lot more than SD.

UCSD used to be more former top choice and dream school. But after talking to a alot of unhappy and disgruntled UCSD students, I was having second thoughts. In fact, I was thinking about UCSB more and more (I visited it before and fell in love). I was still leaning toward UCSD.

When I found out I didn't get accepted into UCSD, I was pretty bummed but I soon got over it. I talked to a couple people who chose UCSB over UCSD and that made me happy. UCSD is pretty socially dead, the people are more aloof, and there's not that much to do in the La Jolla/San Diego area. One of the guys I talked to who chose UCSB over UCSD said that when he visited UCSD, he saw everything there was to do within a couple days. He said he would get very bored so he knew it wasn't for him.

In fact, before when UCSD was my top choice. I had to work so hard to defend it. People would tell me it was full of ugly people and a boring school. I fell in love with the beautiful naturey atmosphere and told them the people I met were pretty nice. But I was getting kinda surprised at how hard I had to work to defend UCSD's reputation and my inclination for it. They all told me UCSB would be a better choice. Everytime I mentioned UCSB people would praise the school and there was barely any criticism about it.

LoL I'm kind of rambling, I hope you get some use out of my thread. But I am not sorry that much anymore that I didn't get into UCSD. I'm going to UCSB in the Fall and I'm very very excited. In retrospect, if I also got into UCSD it would be a very hard choice.

UCSD: good academics, beach, boring, not that much activity, gets a bad rep for unattractive people for some reason
UCSB: still pretty decent academics, beach, lively, lots of social life, great looking people, lol

Natasha what is your major?

I can't decide between UCSD and UCSB either. The more I hear about UCSD and it's lack of "traditional" college atmosphere, i get more tempted to got to SB or Davis. I really don't havent the slightest idea of where i'll be next fall now.
Im sorry i cant give any good advice, so this post might seem sort of random. well anyways, good luck deciding!!

awakendream you are a little too bias UCSD is a school basically for academics you can have fun at SD but you have to just look for it. UCSD is a school for academics really, UCSB is more for overall experience. It just depends what type of person a student is. They either study really hard and try to have a great life or go to another school and work a little less hard.

I am coming in as a Communications major, I possibly will double in Comm/poli sci or comm/history because it seems that every day I am more interested in going to law school. Although I know my majors may change, I am really not much of a science person. However, I am a very hardworking student and academics are more important to me than going to a school with pretty/ugly people (by the way that is really sad, I feel bad for UCSD students that have the rep of being ugly). My fear with UCSD is that it is too "science-y."

UCSB students: do you feel that the EDUCATION has been worth the money, or do you believe (honestly) that you would have gotten a better education at a different college (UCSD perhaps?)

I already know I'll have a thriving social life at SB, but I would like to know other qualities of the school.

thanks to everyone who has posted :)

Bump for current student views

You’re a champ for resurrecting a seven-year old thread.

This was a good bump.

Honestly I love UCSB. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. Everyone here loves it too, it’s not just me. UCSB was my 8th choice school and almost didn’t end up going but I stayed with a friend for a few days (highly recommend this if you are really unsure) and fell in love with it. Within a month of being here I associated it with home. People are so laid back, amazing weather (literally did my hw on the beach twice this week) classes are great…push you but you don’t feel like you can’t handle it, great social life (however USCB IS NOTTTT JUST A PARTY SCHOOL), so much to do. Overall great atmosphere. Promise you that you won’t regret coming

Hi xoxoEM, this was super helpful! I’m looking at UCSB and was wondering if you are enjoying it now, having been there for a bit?
