Business Classes in High School

I've already posted this on another forum but I was wondering if you guys had any opinions or advice on this subject

What classes could i take in high school that would prepare me for a business major at a top tier university?

I am taking Economics Honors and I have already taken AP Macro Economics online. I plan on taking AP Microeconomics online during the summer, but are there any other classes I could take?

And also, are Economics, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics all part of the required classes for business?

Any advice would be great. Thanks

Accounting, entrepreneurship,

Statistics would be great also. S's HS offers a stock market class that he is taking next year.

Would not advise accounting in HS. Would add Calculus, but presume you have had this.

Take English or history electives that emphasize writing. You will stand out.

thorugh what orgnaization/website are you taking micro econ..i cant fit that ony my schedule so i wanted to do it in the summer

Brown14 - I am taking it on FLVS

Thanks for the info guys

I am in IB at my high school but I am currently in Math Studies rather then Calc AB which some of the students in IB are. Is it necessary to take Calc AB/BC when applying to undergraduate business programs or as a business major?

First, why are you taking Economics Honors when you already have AP Macro and will soon take AP Micro? That is redundant, you will learn all the same information except less of it in your Econ Honors class, and a waste of time...

In the competitive business world, high school and even lower-year undergrad business classes are a joke. Do not take Accounting, do not take some crappy high school Business Management or Entrepreneurship class. Take high level math courses and as many as you can (Calc and onwards to advanced levels of Calc, some Statitstics, Diff Equations, Linear Algebra, etc but this is mainly for undergrad you aren't expected to have upper math courses in high school), take economics (done), and that's about it, especially for high school. If you want to take a Finance or Economics class at your local university (or community college I guess), that would be good too.

Stay away from Accounting and stuff like that, and just do the normal high school thing. Whether your actually applying to an undergrad business program or looking to major in business at an normal undergrad school, they look for the same type of education and kid that liberal arts schools and all undergraduate schools look for. That means a balanced, liberal arts high school education. Get your Science, English, History, Language and Math classes in there, like always.

Of course you should take high school business classes. They were the best courses that I took in high school. Accounting, E-Commerce, AP Econ, International Business were all half-year classes that really set me up on the right path. It gave me great insight and some real-world opportunities to apply what I learned. And to see where I wanted to focus. As Marketing major, with a minor in Finance, if your thinking about going towards some type business degree, you NEED to take some business classes in high school.

No, do not focus on business courses in high school if you want to get into a top college for business. Econ, fine, but otherwise you should be focusing on core college prep courses – math, English, language, social studies, and lab sciences. For one, high school courses in business and accounting are generally considered vocational courses and colleges won’t even consider what you did in those for the purpose of admission, meaning they will be totally ignored. Admission to college is the key to then going onto to study business and they want to see college prep courses on your transcript.
