Business Economics Major/Accounting Minor

Hi! I'm going to be a freshman at UCLA this year and I needed some help with this...

My plan is to become an accountant (CPA). I've heard the Accounting Minor is really difficult to get into though. Aside from GPA, is there anything else I can do to boost my chances of getting it as a minor? Also, is there anything extra I can do that would get me ahead in terms of finding a job when I graduate? One more thing: I was thinking about furthering my education (i.e. getting a masters). Is getting an M.B.A. my only choice? I know there's a Masters in Accounting but does an M.B.A. sound better/would it help me more for a career?

Thanks so much!

Yes. The minor is relatively difficult to get into. You need a minimum 3.2 cum/prereq gpa, and even if you meet this target, you're not guaranteed admission. The average gpa for admitted minor students was something like 3.5

You don't need to worry about your mba yet because most top mba programs require or strongly recommend 4-6 years of work experience. By then, you would probably have a better idea whether you would need an mba or not.

There's nothing else aside from your gpa that can boost your chances of getting into the minor. It's really just the gpa they look at, but it's not as difficult to get in as they make it out to be. Don't worry though, even if you aren't in the minor, you can still take the necessary accounting courses to sit in for the CPA exam; the classes aren't restricted to those in the minor.

If you want to have a job when you graduate, and you want to become an accountant, you should look into interning with an accounting firm. I know that for the Big 4 and midtier firms, once you land that internship, you pretty much have a full time offer unless you really screw up. Also, if you want to be an accountant, you probably should not worry at all about an MBA at this point. It's not necessary in that industry, and plus it's kind of early to be thinking about furthering your education before you've even started your first year as an undergrad.

And on another note, I am happy with the accounting minor. But... this is just me, but in hindsight, I wouldn't have gone into the bizecon major. You can PM me if you want more info on that.

Why would someone decline the Business Economics major?

Because Bizecon isn't as "technical" as other majors. Math/econ for instance, might be a better choice if you're interested in i-banking.

btw, cheesecake when if ever, are you going to write your thread about the extreme mediocrity of the econ dept? :/

flopsy >> haha, i know. i've met some people who almost regard it with a sort of reverence, as if it was like getting into the julliard or something.

yahooo >> hmm, i actually did write something, but i'm thinking maybe i should pm it to people who are interested instead of making a new post. what says you

Can you pm it to me if you're not going to make a thread about it? :P

Ditto on the PM thing please. =)

I'd like a PM too, please. :D

Thanks for all the help you guys!

can you send me a PM also please, the cheesecake?

thanks

I'd also like a PM.

Thanks!

ME TOO

10 char

I as well, PM

Please send me the PM as well, thanks.

Me twentieth. Why not just make a new thread?... You're going to be sending a lot of PMs...

^ I second that.

I haven't received my PM yet, how about everyone else?

I would like a PM as well =]

Cheesecake: I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

I'd love the PM as well, incoming Biz Econ major class of 2012 here.
