Does UCI have a good business economics program compared to the other UC's (berkeley and LA aside)?

same question... UCD V UCI Business.. undergradute.

Please defend your position logically and back it up.

UCI's business economics program is new. So far I haven't seen any strengths from the department. My roommate is in it right now, but he is just taking pre-reqs and GE courses. However, the big four accounting firms do recruit here so there are decent job opportunities (although accounting is not doing so hot). I've already heard of instances of seniors graduating with a secure job at one of the firms at a decent starting pay for an accountant.

I'd say UCI is better than UCD for undergrad business. I think Davis only offers economics and maybe Business Management???

UCI offers Business Econ, Economics, and a few variations of economics. I've also heard they're adding an undergrad business major within the next year or two. Also take into account the location of each school. I would think (no facts to back this up) that it would be easier to get a business job out of Irvine than Davis.

You can't go wrong with either school though.

Oh yea the Paul Merage School of Business offers a managment minor under their school, but you have to be REALLY competitive to get in. Expect at least a 3.5 gpa to get in.

UCD offers both economics a BA and managerial economics a BS (harder to get into with prerequisite classes and a stated gpa). There are extensive internship opportunities for UCD students both on and off the campus. If you are interested specifically in business go the managerial economics route as it is geared to business.

what about in comparison to UCSB? I hear their program is pretty decent as well..?

You can't go wrong with UCSB, UCD or UCI. However, UCI does have the edge in this department. Apparently, there has been a lot of interest from the local business community around Irvine for the Business Economics program

"We have many employers, specifically in financial services, who can't wait to hire graduates with a business focus."

And as said before, UCI is looking to be the third UC with an undergraduate business degree which will also draw more attention from the OC/LA business community.

Where have you heard this rumor, and when is it expected?

For the undergraduate degree in business, I believe they are voting on it this April. (I had contacted someone in the department). If it is approved, then I think they are aiming for '08 or '09.

If you want more specific answers, I would get in touch with someone at the business school.

I did find this document:

http://www.senate.uci.edu/senateweb/default2.asp?active_page_id=82 Go to the Proposal links at the bottom.

Would companys look down on a brand new program like that(business admin@irvine)? Or owuld they hire just the same? I would be entering in 08, and would be very intereested in the business admin. major if they offer it. If they begin offering it in 09...what would I do? Go in undeclared and then switch?

Good questions. I think companies would think positively on the program. It's probably best to contact the school directly to get your answers about when they would offer the degree, if approved.

how about economics at sd? thanks!
