Business Information Management

I'm considering going to UCI and my major is BIM. Anyone have information on the major (i.e., good/bad, professors, classes, etc.)? I've read up on it on the website, but I'm hoping to get some insight from a current UCI student :]

Hey collegebound111: I am a current ICS(Information and Computer Science) major at the donal bren school. The BIM major is like a combination of few CS classes and a lot of upper division mgmt classes. Although it is in the school of ICS, you will barely take 5 CS upper divs, including a project course in databases. For more info check out this link –>[undergraduate degree in business information management @ the bren school of information and computer sciences](<a href=“Undergraduate Academic Advising - UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences”>Undergraduate Academic Advising - UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences). If you have more questions let me know.

Zot zot!

oh cool, I was recently accepted into Donald Bren school of ICS as a ICS major! How is the major? Is it competitive? and I heard UCI is offering ‘game’ science’ major this fall, what do you think about that.

ICS is tough man. You better like CS if you are gonna major in that. Countless nights programming, figuring out algorithms, doing designs is not for everyone. The ICS major is unique in the UC system, no one else has it. They might have CS but they are in the Engineering department, which is totally different (this is why you see weird ranks about uci comp sci). The major is really competitive, you will see people that have interned for blizzard or microsoft, before they came to UCI. When you are doing your upper divs, you will see kids correcting MIT/CalTech professors.

Hmm I am not sure about the game science major. But most likely there will be one next year. I think that this will be a great major, especially because Blizzard(Activision) is around here, and their working force consists of 70% UCI grads.

You’re scarin’ me man… I have no experience whatsoever related to computer science, programming. :/

Haha, don’t worry. I didn’t have it either, but if by ICS 23 you don’t get the feeling of programming I suggest you should change major. But try it out.You will start with ICS 21, which is a weeder class. You will see a lot of people at first, but in ICS 22, you will only see half or less. Most likely you will take it with Jacobson, his tests are tricky as hell so be careful. You won’t pass it without passing all the programming tests. If you need help with anything hit me up. ICS is tough, not even berkeley’s program compares to ics, although they get more benefits for being at berkeley.They use our intro books(data structures - Michael T. Goodrich, ics professor).

do you have facebook?

Yeah I will pst you with my name

How hard is ICS 21 series vs Informatics 41 series? Do you know? My parents both majored in CS and they said that ICS 21 is a lot harder and that I should just take Informatics 41.

If you could send me your fb name too, I’d appreciate it! :)

ICS 21 is harder, because you learn java from scratch. Informatics 41 teaches you scheme, which is a really good language to learn if you are a beginner. But if you really want to learn just take 21, it will do you good. What is your intended major? ICS or informatics?

BIM;
I’m majoring in it instead of just straight business since the world is so techonolgically advanced now.

Do you have any idea how many are accepted as BIM majors?

hmm not that many probably, since the major is quite small. But why BIM if you are interested in business? Why not CS major and minor in accounting or mgmt? Data mining is what you need to learn for business. But yeah BIM is not bad. From all the classes that bim majors have to take , probably 122a and the project course are the most rewarding ones, you could even get a job after going through those 2 courses.

Haha, well both of my parents are heavily in CS so I think that also discourages me from going into a CS major w/minor in management/acct. Also, I’m not sure how much I really love working with computers D: I was thinking if I really do like computers, maybe I could fit that into the research/thesis things CHP does by the senior year.
