So I'm interested in working in Shanghai over the summer and I want to do something in business (preferably something to do with banking, but I'm not being too picky I just want something at least business related). I'm hoping to find a job/internship that will look good on my resume (ie. a reputable company, not necessarily a top notch one, but at least something people have heard of) but I honestly have no idea where to start...any advice/pointers?

Also, my qualifications aren't necessarily the best (3.2 GPA, financial math + econ major at UMich, internship at Ameriprise Financial freshman year) so alot of internships are "out of reach" so to say...especially due to my low GPA :(. My Mandarin is decent, but I'm hoping it's a company where English will be used cause honestly, I don't trust my Chinese that much :P

PS. searching "business internships in shanghai" in google isn't yielding anything useful :/

I know someone, with your similar experience, interning there last summer. She was a rising senior though, majoring in....I can't remember exactly, but definitely something with math.

I don't know that person that well, otherwise I would ask them more about it.

Also, I am not very familiar with Shanghai but google ShanghaiExpat for the forum for ...expats in Shanghai.

I found that your GPA doesn't really matter. Believe me, I have a lower GPA than you at a much less reputable university and I interned in China.

Also I would post on the Chinese job sites, there are like dozens of them.

MatchDragon is the one I like the best for some reason.

I would also translate your resume in Chinese, so you have a bilingual version. If your Chinese is not that good, I am sure you can find someone in Michigan to do it for you.

Thats good advice from hello_motto. The main job sites in China are 51job.com, Zhaopin.com, and ChinaHR. 51job has an English section I'm pretty sure. Don't worry if they don't as I know tons of MNC's advertise with them anyways so you should be able to get some good leads.

If anything, I suggest finding interesting companies and researching if they have a presence in Shanghai. If they do, just go directly to that office and inquire about an internship position. As they say, why bother when you can go straight to the source! :)
