I know I will be taking a business 101 type class and calculus the first year, but what else can I expect to take the first semester?

IM me at HowdyDoo92

Haha, I'm thinking about the same thing. If all goes according to plan I should have around 35-40 hours by the time my IB and AP scores come in. If that's the case I may forgo my freshmen year and go directly to sophmore.

here are the required classes for a degree in finance: http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/major/degreeplans/0406/Finance.pdf

you can replace "finance" in the link with the name of a different major, such as "marketing"

You can only take Business 101 in the spring as a regular business major, and only in the fall if you are in BHP or are a transfer student

what about "foreign language" for a business major?

2 years of high school foreign language OR 1 year of college foreign language satisfies the Business school's foreign language requirement.

1 year college foreign language = 5 hrs for two semesters (10 total) ... just thought I'd make that clear

For business freshmen:

You'll want to take MIS 301 in the fall and BA324 in the spring. If you have a lot of transfer credit I'd also recommend starting your accounting sequence in the spring. You could take it in the fall too if you thought you could do really well in it. You will also need to take a sociology/pyschology/anthropology class to get a prerequisite out of the way for some upper division business classes (management I think?). Then, I'd fill the rest in with whatever general requirements you still have left to take (calculus, science, english, speech, foreign language, etc.).

For BHP freshmen:

The BHP advisors are real adamant about not starting your accounting sequence until your sophomore year. This leaves you with BA101, MIS 301 and BA324H to take for your business classes during the first year. Fill in the rest with psy/soc/anth and the other general requirements.

If I still want to try and get into BHP sophmore year should I still take accounting sequence freshmen year? And which would you recommend out of soci/pysch/antro?

For sopohomore admissions into BHP (from the website):

Please note that no student will be admitted to the Business Honors Program who has received credit for more than one of the core courses listed below in a regular (non-honors) section.:

ACC 311, ACC 312, STA 309, BA 324,
MAN 336, MAN 335, FIN 357, MSC 371,
MKT 337, LEB 323

Students are advised to enroll in GOV, HIS, and ECO classes at the University of Texas at Austin during their freshman year to show a challenging course load.

This means that you could start your accounting sequence in the spring taking ACC 311 and still apply. You wouldn't be able to take BA324 then. If you made it into BHP, you wouldn't be able to take ACC312H until the following spring since it is only offered in the spring. If not, you could take it and BA324 in the fall and still be ahead of most people.

Most people I know take psychology classes and like them.

Remember you need to pass the computer proficiency test to take MIS 301 and BA 324

Do I do that at orientation (computer test) or do I do it sometime else? Is there any credit I can do to obtain that?

I believe you can take the computer proficiency test at orientation but check your orientation schedule and talk to the people at check-in. Scheduling tests is done then.

I also recommend you study the McCombs technology website for tips and training (http://learning.mccombs.utexas.edu/tutorials/CPTReview.htm). The test is specific and it's helpful to review this information first.

Is that the only stuff you need to know on the CPT?

Also, UT holds help study sessions to review for the CPT during the school year

Kcirsch,

I think that's it. My son said it was fairly straightforward but he barely passed, even though he has had significant computer training. It is very specific and has some quirks, like you can't use the back button.

Here's another link that addresses when the test is given, how to prepare, scoring, etc.: http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/proficiencytest.asp.
By the way, did my earlier link work for you? It isn't working for me now even though it did earlier.

Here's what I'm think for my freshmen year:

Fall Semester:
MIS 301
M 408D
PSY 301
CMS 306M
GOV 310L

Spring Semester:
BA 324
Business Admin 101
STA 309
GOV 312L
PHL 303
CC 301

Still deciding if I should do STA 2nd year at honors level and do fine arts then or not. Overall I think it should be manageable.

grandpabuzz, what do you plan to major in? im wondering becuase im looking at majoring in marketing but i have no idea what classes to take my first year.

crustytow,
it depends on your AP credits but the marketing degree plan is here: http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/major/degreeplans/0406/Marketing.pdf

I plan to major in Finance. What specific type of finance I'm not sure yet.

As grandpabuzz wrote, is it common for both BA324 and BA101 to be taken during the spring and MIS301 to be taken in the fall?

Has anyone registered yet? I'm taking:

CMS 306M
ECO 304L
PSY 319K
ACC 311
M 408L (you don't need the more challenging M 408D unless you are doing Engineering Route to Business)
