So, I’ve recently decided that though I love science, business is a higher interest for me and is something I’ve loved since I can remember. I know many colleges look to see some backround in science, so my question is if I major in business, but require how ever many sciences courses for med school, what is my best option in achieving that?
You will have plenty of room in your schedule to take the 8 or so premed reqs… especially since most will also fulfill your core requirements. Sounds like a great choice if you enjoy business and is a great backup plan.
Use your free electives to take the required pre-med courses. Go to a college pre-med website to see the required courses.
Successful med school applicants major in areas other than in the usual suspects (eg some flavor of bio). Although business is fine, it’s not only a matter of trying to fit in some year long seqs and their labs among your major/GE reqs, it’s also a matter of earning competitive grades, finding time for ECs, prepping for and scoring well on MCAT, having a college life. Can you do all the above in a more traditional pathway, ie applying at end of third year with goal of starting med school after your senior year? Or would tapping on brakes freshman year, giving yourself some time to acclimate to college life, and waiting to apply at end of senior year be a better strategy for you? Knowing yourself, what do you think would be the best option for you? I don’t need an answer, but as soon as possible I’d talk to your college’s premed advisor, especially if you plan to apply at end of third year. Good luck.
