Let me get this out of the way and say that the goal for me is to get into a job related with business, whether it be marketing, management, or even creating my own company. Now I realize today is an extremely technology reliant world, and I want to capitalize off of what I believe may be another technology boom in the next ten years or so. A business major would make me learn how to manage a company/department, which I feel is going to be very important in the near future. On the flip side, a computer science major would allow me to understand what’s behind the technology and I would be able to understand most things in the technology field. I’ve also considered majoring in business and minoring in computer science in order to obtain the skills in business and some core skills from computer science. I’ve been accepted into Berkeley and USC for the upcoming fall term and I’m leaning towards Berkeley since I’m in the Bay Area myself. What are your opinions on this? I’m having a lot of trouble deciding on what I want to do in college and which path would make it easier to achieve my dream of going into the business field after college. Thanks in advance!
@ksharm345 I’m in a very similar situation as you. I’ve been accepted into an undergraduate business school albeit in the east coast. My passion lies in the intersection between business and technology.
I think in your case you should narrow down your interest in business in the coming months. This could be done via talking to your alumni, professionals, or even internships. Business as a whole is very broad.
In response to the technology aspect, you do not have to commit to a major or a minor. You have the option to try out these courses to see if you even like it. Maybe consider learning over the summer. There are many who have a strong technological foundation despite never majoring or minoring in the CS.
Don’t feel like you have to decide now. Explore the courses available to find your niche.
@AnewCrown Yeah I know for certain that I want to do one or the other, as both are subjects I tend to get deep into when talking with my peers. The good thing is that I have two years at Berkeley to figure out what I really excel at. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Hope you have fun wherever you’re going for college!
