Hi fellow parents,
I am a parent with a question I would like to pose to anyone with a business background. My son is currently a junior going for a Physicians Assistant program. He switched the beginning of this year from dentistry. My husband and I would like for him to take business classes this summer for a business minor. He attends Villanova University. He in turn would just like to take business classes in the fall which will not result in a minor. It may take him a few years to finally be accepted in a PA school and our opinion is that he would be able to better find a job with a major in comprehensive science and a minor in business. He thinks that just listing that he took business classes at Villanova will be sufficient. As an employer, which would be more desirable?
Thank you for any imput.
It may take a couple of years to get into PA but those schools are going to want to see that he had jobs in medical fields during those years.
I don’t think a business minor is ever a bad idea. Accounting, finance and econ are very useful regardless of your occupation.
If he doesn’t go for the minor, your son can always list the business classes he took on his resume. Unless having a business minor allows you to interview at more places of interest at his college, I don’t see it as a big deal either way.
And I agree with @bhs1978 that if his goal is to be a PA the grad programs will want to see medically related work after college. My D’s friends who are looking towards PA grad school are working as EMTs or in a hospital setting.
Many business schools do not allow non-business students to take business classes. Check with Villanova.
They offer a minor so you can always go in with the intent of obtaining a minor. If you fall short, you’ve still taken several classes. I would think the most difficult part will probably be getting the classes you want since business majors usually have priority. They also offer a summer program (which may be what you referenced in the original post). Regardless of what he does, I would make sure to get some accounting.
