I’ve been obsessed ever since freshman year of high school about college admissions. I would literally go to the library everyday during my free period specifically to look up colleges on the computer that I may be interested in. As an upcoming senior I look back to that and I realize how much of a waste of time it was. Not for preparing for college as a freshman, but because I was only looking at elite colleges and convinced myself that I have a chance of getting in.
Now that I’m a senior this year, I need to be more realistic. My academics and scores are not that impressive since I’m a very average student. I will list them below along with my extracurricular activities. Please let me know what colleges are good for my stats. I would preferably go to college around the Connecticut area since it is close to home. I’m fine with going out of state close by (New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, etc.) but it would need to be a public school to advoid the insane private school prices.
Extracurricular:
-Wrestling 9,10,11,12
-Investing club 10,11
-DECA Club 12
-Out of school investment group 9, 10, 11, 12
-Marching band 9
Volunteer experience:
-Supported my city’s youth wrestling team. I helped coach and volunteer at tournaments.
-Raised money for breast cancer, autism awareness, and collected food for the church.
I will major in finance and minor in economics for college.
I am an honors student but I unfortunately have not taken any AP or lvl 1 classes due to the lack of guidance in my school. I didn’t realize how crucial they were until recently. All of my classes were lvl 2 (average). I understand this could make my GPA look inflated at college admissions but you can decide how much it hurts my chances of being accepted.
Thank you so much in taking the time to help me during the most stressful times of my life! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Many public schools charge “insane prices” to out of state students. If cost is an issue, you should start by looking at your in state public universities. Your stats are low to expect a price break out of state.
Each college has a net price calculator on their website. Run it with your parents to see what you might pay at each college.
I would consider studying for the SATs over the remainder of the summer to try to get those scores up.
If you are looking for publics certainly the CUNY schools are worth looking into. It looks to me like Baruch, Brooklyn College and Queens College offer finance majors but you should double check that. A number of SUNY schools offer finance as well and here is a tool you can use to search out schools with your area of interest. https://www.suny.edu/attend/find-a-suny-program/undergraduate/
BTW, CCNY has Financial Economics and you can also do courses at Baruch (Baruch, Brooklyn College and Queens College offer finance majors as mentioned by @happy1 ):
We know someone who is in love with the Business program at Colby Sawyer in New Hampshire, not to be confused with Colby College. I think you could get in there easy enough. Lovely campus, quintessential NE. Student there is doing International Business.
If you’re willing to look a little further afield while remaining on the East Coast, UNC Wilmington and Appalachian State both have excellent undergrad business programs. I’m an International Business student at UNCW who is also OOS (New Jersey), and you’d be surprised by the amount of Northeasterners at the school. I know a few Nutmeggers at the school myself.
