I asked this question on another thread in this forum and did not get any responses, so am posting on a new thread. Are there typically many entering college freshmen in the BUTI Young Artists Vocal Program or do mostly younger high school students attend? My daughter recently auditioned for undergraduate voice performance at BU; she did not apply to BUTI. A couple of days ago (a couple of weeks after the audition) she received an e-mail telling her that her BU audition qualifies her for automatic acceptance to BUTI should she choose to apply, and the deadline is extended. She's considering it, but wonders whether there will be a significant number of others her age or whether most are younger high school students. Any thoughts?

I don’t know about the vocalists in particular, but the year my daughter was in the orchestra there it seemed like most of the students were going into their senior year, with a good number who had just completed senior year, about the same going into their junior year and only a few going into their sophomore year. A large percentage of the students there will be either her age or a year younger.

Has she received any word about the BU acceptance? We would like to include it in the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1045522-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2011-a-13.html if she has.

Thank you for the helpful response! No, she has not yet received an admission decision from BU. At the music info session we attended while there for the audition, they said decisions would probably be e-mailed the last Friday in March.

My daughter attended BUTI last summer, but she’s an instrumentalist. The majority of people she knew were either entering conservatories or their senior year of high school.

Same here - my S was in the Youth Wind Ensemble and he is a freshman at NU this year in the Bienen School. His section was half rising college freshman music majors and half high school seniors. BTW, he LOVED BUTI and still thinks the entire experience was magical.

My daughter attended the BUTI Young Artist Vocal Program the summer after sophomore and junior years of high school. Both years there were a couple of kids who were starting at BU that fall as college freshman - my daughter was actually good friends with one of those girls last summer. The training is phenomenal and I know my daughter’s friend felt it was an excellent experience that really helped prepare her for college. The vocal faculty teach classes, etc. there so you start college already knowing some of the professors fairly well.

Thank you, everyone, for the very helpful replies! Agmom, do you know how many students are in the vocal program each year? And were the rising college freshmen going only to BU or were there kids in the program who were going to go to other colleges? Doesn’t really matter, just curious. My daughter doesn’t know yet where she’ll be going to college.

When D attended (3 summers ago as an instrumentalist), the rising college freshmen were headed to a variety of schools, although there were certainly a bunch aimed for BU. But if she goes elsewhere, she wouldn’t at all be out in the cold.

My daughter actually just got home and corrected me - she said that last summer there were about 10 kids about to enter college this past fall, (with a total of 70 kids in the program). Of the 10, she thinks probably 6-7 were headed to BU, and the other 3-4 to other conservatory programs.

They wind up everywhere. Of the ten bassists the year my daughter attended, I believe two went to BU and one each to Curtis, Juilliard, Rice, Oberlin, NEC, and one of the top conservatories in Japan (I forget the name.) I’m not sure where the other two went, but as a group they did pretty well for themselves.

One more question: Is it possible to go home for one weekend or even just an overnight during the course of the 6-week program? We have a family event occurring during that time that it would be nice for my daughter to be able to attend and we live only a couple of hours away.

A full weekend might be difficult because the students often perform during the afternoons then. An overnight may be possible, but you may not be able to plan in advance until the student has a rehearsal schedule. Most students spend their free evenings either at one of the Tanglewood Music Center events (their tuition includes admission to almost all of the evening and weekend concerts there) or else socializing in Lenox and eating something better than what is served in the cafeteria.

There are usually major performances for the BUTI students on the third and sixth weekends of the program. Time away on either of those weekends would be a problem.

For us, the performances occurred on the second, fourth and sixth weekends. We were able to slip D3 away for a couple of nice meals, but I’m not sure what their policy would be on an overnight away. Worth checking, though, especially for a major family event like a wedding.

Thanks, stradmom. It has been a while since I was there and it is possible that either they have changed the schedule or my memory is slipping.

If you want to make some friends for life, find a couple of your child’s buddies who do not have parents visiting on one of the concert dates and treat them to dinner with your family after the concert.

The family event in question is not a major one so her missing it would not be a problem. Sounds like is is best to stay put while there. One decision my D is struggling with is whether she wants to be away for 6 weeks of her last summer before college. But other than that it sounds like a great opportunity. We did hear, however, that the individual weekly voice lessons are given by graduate students rather than faculty. Is that true? If so, how did your kids feel about it? Thank you all for your thoughtful and helpful responses to my many questions!

DS attended BUTI for two summers…after jr and sr years in high school. He is a trumpet player.

Re: overnights away. You need to get permission to have your BUTI student leave for an overnight. This is possible but not encouraged. We had a large family event on a Saturday night and DS and I drove to Maine for it…left on Saturday morning and returned by noon on Sunday (there was a required concert to attend that day). I picked him up after ensemble rehearsal on Saturday morning. In retrospect, it was nuts to do this but we did. If he had had a concert that weekend, he would have been a no show at the family event.

My daughter had the same voice teacher both summers she was at BUTI. Her teacher had already completed her Master’s degree the first summer my daughter had her, and her educational, performance, and directing credentials to that point were substantial. My daughter’s regular voice teacher during the school year is through Curtis, and she was thrilled with my daughter’s progress after her first summer there; thus, the second summer.
