As a recently admitted student, I've been looking at dorms all day trying to make my choice. I was not accepted into the honors program, but I intend on applying to the program after my freshman year. I have a fairly decent resume, and was granted a founders scholarship upon admission. My high-school GPA is approximately 3.87 and I have an AP loaded senior year schedule.

Tulane's housing site states that "students accepted into the Honors program have priority for residency at Butler". Does this mean that non-honors freshman may apply?

I ask because I'm interested in being in the program in the future, and would like to start my freshman year on the right foot. Is it wrong to assume that Butler could help me with this?

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Yes, you may apply. Butler doesn’t always get completely full with Honors students, although I think lately it has. But I am not sure. I don’t think being in Butler would make a huge difference to your getting into the program next year, especially if you can get into a quieter dorm than Sharp or Monroe, such as Wall or JL (I am assuming you are female because Lyra sounds like a female name to me. Now I will be completely red-faced if that is wrong). Are you going to try and take the Freshman Honors Colloquium course anyway? It would be a great way to get to know people in the HP, just be aware that it is a very reading intensive course.

It’s not so much a matter of whether or not the dorm would help me get into the HP, but whether or not it will get me into the right social circles…or at least the ones I want to be in.

Ha, and no worries. I’m a female so you’re safe on the JL suggestion.

I would love to take the Freshman Honors Colloquium. I intend to major in English, so intensive reading is my forte. Are you a student at Tulane? If not, what’s your affiliation with the school?

Regardless, thank you so much for your response!

Hi Lyra - I am a Tulane alum and now a Tulane Dad. My D is a freshman in the HP and lives in Butler. She is also an English major. She has liked it very much.

I understand where you are going with your inquiries, I think. You want to be with the more serious students, and there is nothing wrong with that of course. That is one of the reasons I suggested the Honors Colloquium course. Prior to about a month ago I thought it was restricted to HP students, but Dr. Luongo, the head of the program, informed me that he would not turn away a highly capable student (and you obviously are) that wanted to be in the course. So go ahead and sign up for it, and if there is any problem because you are not in the program (who knows how the computer flags these things) just write to him ot the professor that is teaching that section of the course and it will be cleared up. He is really nice and very responsive. That assumes there is room in the class, because HP students would get preference. But this year at least that would not have been a problem at all.

That will be a good way to get acquainted with some of the HP students. You can also sign up for others Honors sections of courses. Again these are not restricted beyond that HP students will get first “dibs”.

Finally, are you going to any of the June orientations? If so, I might have a suggestion or two.

Thank you so much, I can’t tell you how helpful this has all been!

And I would love to attend at least one of the June orientations, but I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to get down there as the airfare is a bit pricey.

(I’m up in Pennsylvania)

Southwest flies out of both Pittsburgh and Philadeliphia to New Orleans. You should be able to find a decent fare if you plan ahead enough. Let me know if you decide to go.

Well, this is convenient. I rode my bookmark over to CC intending to create a thread asking a similar question to this, and, seeing that it already exists, I hope you don’t mind if I piggyback with a partially related question:

Does anyone have any experience with Wall? I was 100% set on Butler, and then I heard about Wall, and I’ve always been really intrigued with the idea of a residential college (I’ll admit, it’s one of the reasons I regret not being able to afford Yale). However, I’m still mostly leaning towards Butler. Does anyone have some amazing anecdotes or stats on Wall that might tilt me in the opposite direction, so to speak?

Lyra, I’m from PA as well…look for a PM from me =)
