Butterfield/Russell Sage for freshmen?

Is it possible to apply to live in a substance-free dorm as a freshman?

I guess the larger question is, will we have any say in where we live?

ummm...your going to dimensions right..i would ask there...but from what i found out when i was last in hanover...river and choates is pretty much it...i'm not sure about sub free

russell-sage is where you will be placed if you are a freshman requesting substance-free housing. i think that's a mixed-class dorm.

the only way you will have a say where you live this year, from what i've heard, is whether you want substance free or not, or whether you apply for East Wheelock. Other than that, you get assigned somewhere, but not just River/Choates.

Butterfield and Russell Sage are substance free communities. First-year students are assigned primarily to triple rooms in Russell Sage, which is a mixed class community. Butterfield is all upperclasss.

The majority of students in the entering class will be assigned to double and triple occupancy rooms. Some first-years will be assigned to single rooms or quads (four students). Sonicyout is correct, you can request sub free or apply to live in East Wheelock. Othr than that you are assigned somewhere.

Approximately half of the first-year class is housed in Dartmouth's First-Year Housing Program. Participants are randomly selected for this initiative located in the River and Choates clusters. The professional and student staff who live and work in these communities endeavor to foster a strong sense of community and class unity, and aid new students in their transitions to college life. The live-in staff works in collaboration with educators and faculty to offer events and programs designed to meet the unique needs of first-year students, and acclimate them to life at Dartmouth.

The other half of the first-year class, and all transfer and exchange students, are assigned to mixed-class housing. These residential communities house both first-year students and upperclass students. The professional and upperclass staff are there to foster a sense of community, serve as a resource, and provide events and programs that are both educational and social in nature. Staff focus on promoting interaction among each of the classes within the community, while still meeting individual students' needs.

First-year students are not eligible to request specific buildings on their housing applications. Housing and roommate assignments are made using the responses to lifestyle questions that are found on the housing questionnaire for the incoming class. These questions have proven to be our best indicators for roommate compatibility, so it is crucial that students answer the questions realistically and honestly. It is also important to note that assignments are made without regard to race, religion, color, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

I think that's a good philosophy...

I do have one concern, though...what if you are really uncomfortable with your roomate(s)?

Also, (this is specifically for Sybbie) what are the advantages/disadvantages of living in East Wheelock? Are the rooms better there?
What about the sub-free dorms? How are these rooms?
THanks.

IMO, the rooms ARE better at EW, but by just a little. i stayed in a common room/bathroom/two single-rooms type, and i think that's the typical (perhaps only) set up at EW. also, the buildings themselves are really nice, but i also went to see river, choates, and fayerweather and thought that they weren't that bad at all. i thought the only real difference in the rooms was purely aesthetics (EW rooms might be a bit bigger, but not by much IMO). i was a bit disturbed by the three-bed rooms (saw them at fayerweather), tho, 'coz i can't imagine rooming with two other girls and not ever fighting (actually, that happened for six weeks this summer, but it was b/c we chose to room together b/c we already knew each other's personalities very well, and got along great).

the huge difference btwn EW and other dorms to me was EW was very quiet. that could be a good thing even for partiers if they also like to be in control of when they can have quiet times for themselves. a downside for partiers is EW is pretty far from the frat row (actually, it's an okay walk, and good for those calf muscles, heh). oh yeah, i also thought the better-looking guys didn't live in EW, but i think you're a guy so you prolly don't care.

oh, oops, just realized you meant the Q to be specifically for sybbie. my bad...

I stayed in Fayerweather on my visit in Feb, and I was impressed. I guess, though, because I am a guy, that I don't quite understand firsthand about female bickering...

If I could get into Fayerweather (which I cannot b/c it's not for first years, I don't think) I would definitely live there.

Taurustorus,

You summed it up pretty well. My daughter's set up is a 3 room quad 2- double bedrooms, common room and bathroom. Her complaint also is that it is pretty far, but not as far as the River and atleast the Choates are close to frat row. Their room is a pretty nice sized room However I can't comment on the good looking guy thing, so I'll have to go with your take on it. She said that they are pretty tight on their floor and there are floors where that isn't the case. Which building did you stay in?

Floor plans for the East Wheelock Cluster.

IvyH20, there are first years living in the Fayers.

sybbie, i stayed at andres on an (apparently) all-frosh floor (3rd). some kids from my school stayed at zimmerman.

IvyH20, first-years do live at fayers, but they don't apply to live there (i'm pretty sure), so just cross your fingers you'd end up there.

You were on Andres 3rd, too?!! So was I!

I don't know if I met you, but I'm Kat (blonde short girl from Michigan).

hey kat! i'm pretty sure i saw you, even tho we didn't talk. i'm thinking of a blonde short girl (tho i dunno about "short"... i'm midgety myself, lol) who was on the saturday, 1:15pm bus to manchester. is that you? i noticed you (if that was really you) b/c a samantha from michigan (she sat across from me on the bus) pointed at you when talking about something... i think the fact that it was snowing in michigan or something. anyway, my bad if that wasn't you (tho what are the chances michigan has a bunch of short blondes considering dartmouth? lol). btw, i'm may-lieng, from northern virginia =)

Yep, that was me!! Samantha (the other girl) also goes to my school, so we came to Dimensions together. I don't think I ever met you, so, yeah, nice meeting you on CC! We'll have to have a huge CC meet-up this fall...

I'm 5'3.5, and yes, that extra half an inch matters. Exactly how "midgety" are you?

5'2.5", and i definitely know what you're talking about regarding that half an inch, lol (i don't ever say 5'2"). anyway, i'm really excited that a bunch of us are def. going to dartmouth! especially the kids from my school... usually 3 kids enrolling at dartmouth is a good year but this year we have at least 8!! and i agree about that CC meet-up. i also hope i get to go on a DOC trip...

About housing in substance free community ---

What exactly are the guidelines for substance free? I dont want to be in a dorm with 24 hour drunks and cant get to sleep/study but at the same time I want to party every once in a while.

Guidelines are you sign something (or simply agree) to not ever be under the influence or in possesion while there.

note about east wheelock... PAPER THIN walls. I have plenty of friends who live there and I can hear their roommate's (normal-volume) conversations on the other side of the wall.

Big plus are singles in EW that have private showers... ;)
