Buying a Computer after arriving at Stanford

Regarding buying a new computer, do you guys think it's better to buy an external CD ROM drive than a DVD drive? The "Welcome to Stanford" book said that a CD-ROM drive was a must for the burning purposes, but do you think it is necessary to have the DVD burning/viewing function as well?

I am not sure if I will have the time to watch DVD's on my computer or burn DVD's instead of CD-ROM's. Probably a CD burner is enough for college life, but if the drive takes up the same physical space, I might as well buy a more multifunctional drive. I would appreciate any opinions on this. Thanks!
