Hi! So I am an incoming Junior and have decided to take the old SAT in December, before the transition. But, I am aware that I will have no choice but to take the new PSAT and was wondering if the official SAT College board will be sufficient prep for the PSAT or will that require a whole different approach?
Also, do you recommend using my summer time to study for the PSAT or SAT? Thanks!
You can’t use the Old SAT material for the PSAT. If you do, you’ll be wasting a lot of time. The PSAT will be completely different from the Old SAT.
But I think concept wise, it will help. I improved my writing score on the old SAT to almost perfect and my new SAT score also rose. In fact, my new SAT score is actually pretty equivalent to my old SAT score. So I actually disagree with @mmk2015. However, the format is totally different and unless you do more practices for the new PSAT, you may make a few more mistakes than you should have.
Btw, yeah the score charts aren’t out for new SAT yet, but there are some good estimates online.
@Kalilsabel There is some overlap between the new PSAT and the old SAT, but I would recommend you to practice with the new SAT content as much as you can. I would start with the new PSAT practice test available at Collegeboard’s website: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sites/default/files/psat_nmsqt_practice_test_1.pdf along with the PSAT practice questions: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sample-questions/math
Also, use the four new SAT tests released by Collegeboard, not all of these will appear on PSATs but right now this is the best source for PSAT material: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/full-length-practice-tests
There is plenty of overlap between basketball and soccer (running, jumping, pushing bodies), but if you were training for a big basketball game, would you hire a soccer coach and train by playing soccer?
And to figure out what exactly from the Old SAT you can use on the new PSAT is a good waste of time.
If you’re planning to prepare for the PSAT, stick to New SAT material. Don’t waste your time with the Old SAT material.
