How bad does a “c” look in a non-core class to colleges? I got a C my sophomore year for my economics class, and I’m afraid that it will ruin my chances to more selective colleges. After my sophomore year, I received straight A’s for both semesters my junior year, so I am hoping that shows an upward trajectory and improvement.
For some colleges, Economics is a core elective course. How “bad” it looks depends upon many factors when you are talking about selective colleges. Your grades/GPA are not reviewed in a vacuum so having all A’s Junior year with an upward trend will help.
Control what you can. You recovered nicely it sounds like. Will a C hurt or not will be up to a school but it’s not life or death. The pressure you kids put on yourself for perfection is worrisome.
There are zillions of great colleges, many of them are considered ‘more selective’ so that depends on your definition.
Like everyone you should have a balanced list of schools and you’ll have many opportunities for a great education.
Straight A’s all through junior year is great! Schools will like that upward trend in grades, and don’t forget, spring semester 2020 was messed up by the pandemic. Some students had a very hard time staying motivated for online school - the colleges know that. Stop thinking about it at all, and just look forward. It was what it was - you cannot change it now.
