C/o 2023 - orientation/pillars/class registration

Son is admitted to Honors College & Moore School for IB. We live near Nashville TN so it’s about 7 hours.

He’s registered for an orientation session in late July that matches up with one of the Pillars sessions - something that we thought was important since he doesn’t know anyone going to UofSC. We wanted to combine them to save a trip.

However - will doing orientation that late negatively impact his registration and get him stuck with bad class times? He’ll AP out of some things and I’d think the Honors College class sizes would help a lot - but thoughts/recommendations please?

I was told that they will be opening classes throughout orientation sessions so doing a later session will not necessarily impact his choice of classes or times. There may be some impact as I’ve been told by current students to do the first one available but we are in state so that’s much easier done for us. As for Pillars, my daughter is doing the July 9th-13th session and is very excited. An acquaintance of hers did it and told her it was the best thing she did to prepare herself for college life so we feel it is worth the expense and investment of time.

IIRC my D (Honors and IB) chose her courses during a phone conversation with her advisor in late Mat/early June, well before she attended Orientation. Thus during the slot on their Orientation schedule (Day 2 after HC lunch) for course selection, she confirmed her choices with her advisor, got a tour of the Honors College offices, and was finished early (I remember because we are 10 hours away and I felt lucky that we were able to head home an hour or two earlier than expected).

We did a late July orientation and my son had no issues getting his classes.
