D is working through the common app activities section and has asked my advice.

She had a leadership position in a sport 10th and 11th grade, also put in high level club team time for a coupe of years but is not playing this year. She has room to list the sport but is thinking to put it lower down than some other things because she isn't doing it this, senior, year. She will not play in college and she has another sport she is continuing.

She also played an instrument in school for 7 years but not junior or senior year. Would she list that at all?

You should certainly list it as long as you are clear as to what years she was involved in each activity. And I agree and would put the activities that she dropped during HS further down on the list.

My kids didn’t use the common app…but they listed their current activities first, and other things after that. Like most kids, they did things for two or three years, but not necessarily all four. Not unusual at all.

Yes list them and the years participated. On non collegeboard apps my kids simply put Grades 5-12 or Grades 9-11 or some such notation. Agree, nothing unusual, many kids drop and add activities as they age and their interests grow.

You would, though, place it lower than current activities on the list of 1-10? Even though it may have been a larger time commitment in the past than any single current activity?
