Cable television in Dorm?

Does anyone know how to set that up? Is it done through the local cable co. or through FSU?

I've heard that it's $9 per month, or something similar. Any info would be appreciated.

It’s $39.99 a month…:stuck_out_tongue: Here’s the rates page, and you can navigate around to find out more info.

[Rates / Residence Halls / Cable TV (Seminole Cable Vision) / - Communications / Information Technology Services / FSU - Information Technology Services](http://its.fsu.edu/Communications/Cable-TV-Seminole-Cable-Vision/Residence-Halls/Rates)

Whoa! $39 a month! lol Where did I get $9 a month from…I have no idea.

It is about $10 a month if you have suitmates and split it up.

And make sure you mail in your monthly payment early instead of doing it online. I can’t believe the ‘fee’ for an online payment is up to $7 a pop now! It’s outrageous!

My daughter with have a roomie, so she’s going to talk to her about splitting it in half.

Netflix is $9 a month, lol.

Yau, thanks for the tip to avoid the $7 online fee. :)

There’s also Hulu ;)

Between the two of them, I watch all the new shows I like the next day.
Plus if you have a laptop, you can get an S-Video cord or an HDMI Cable and (mostlikely) be able to hook that up to the television in the room to watch it on TV instead of your computer screen.

The cable “rip-off” fee goes almost entirely to the cable company even though FSU collects the money. I think 39.99 is redic. My daughter’s suite did just fine without it. There are also TV’s in the rec rooms. It became an event each week for certain shows, and got kids out of their rooms to gather and watch.

I like cable too much to give it up  Oh, and if you see the warnings that a channel is going to be removed please call! If they get enough callers they work out a deal to keep the channel.

I feel like I get too many random fees going through my account to pay $7 a go.

this may be a stupid question, BUT, I know that cable splitters are prohibited, but is that enforced??

Well if you MUST have two TV’s in one room, I guess they are not likely to find out. But I would not be running cable through the bathroom to the next room or across the hall. Your RA will find it and you will have a problem.

If you have a modern digital TV, with a rabbit ears antenna in your dorm room you should be able to receive over-the-air broadcast high definition TV for free from the local Tallahassee stations. It’s not cable with ESPN and HBO, but at least you could watch some shows once in a while or check local news and weather reports. I can’t see paying $40/ month for cable when you are not going to have a lot of time for watching TV with studies and everything else going on at college. If you bring a TV, bring a DVD player–sometimes professors ask you to watch a movie for your class–having the DVD player and TV can be a big convenience then.

My D lived in the dorm freshman year. No one in her suite had TV. Not a lot of students had it on her floor. But between the TV’s in the lounges on each floor, she had no problem watching live TV when she wanted, and used hula and abc.com etc to watch the next day. TV’s were gathering places anyway and events were fun.

I had cable in my dorm room at USF (it was free-built into dorm rent) with maybe 70 channels–we never watched it because there was too much other stuff going on.

I was told the FSU cable with taxes comes to $46.42 a month.

Cable comes to $320 for the whole year. Think of all the things you can buy for $320. Is cable better than anything you can think of?

There are so many substitutes (IE: The lounge, SLC, websites, etc). Unless you really feel you need it, I’d go as far as to call cable wasteful spending.

I am too addicted to television to go without it. I wish they offered DVR service in the dorms!
And you can share the charge with your roommate(s)!

Yes. At least you are honest. But you need to cut the umbilical/cable cord and try to get a life on campus away from the TV.

I don’t watch THAT much TV, but I like to see the news and weather in the morning while I’m getting ready. I also have a few favorite shows that I wouldn’t want to miss, but I would not let it stand in my way of a social life!
