cable TV

Is Cable TV free at Duke? Do we need to bring our own TV, and do we have to pay for service? That would suck.

Unless you are fine with relying on the common room TV, you need to bring your own TV and pay for cable. Cable ranges from $32 to $45 per month.

Is there any free TV service if I bring my own TV. What's with all these extra charges. I thought the housing/room fee included the TV bill.

I'm probably going to just use the common room. How is it? What do people watch usually, are many people there, where is it?

depends on the dorm, in GA the TV was usually open.

not many people pay for cable (only 2 rooms out of about 12 had it on my hall). that being said, it served as a way to bring people together for sports / popular shows.

My roomie and I didn't have a TV, and we made do just fine. Then again, she doesn't watch any TV and I only watch Desperate Housewives & Grey's Anatomy.

There were a couple of times when I'd have to run to an adjacent dorm for Grey's because some other people had gotten to the commons TV first, but you'll find that certain things are always on. For example, 24 was always on. DH and GA were usually on in either my commons or the dorm next to ours. And if there is a Duke basketball game, no question about it, THAT WILL ALWAYS BE WHAT IS ON. Most people with TVs watch those in the commons anyway - it's more fun with like 50 people in there cheering. If you plan to watch a less-popular show during, say, 24's time slot, you're almost definitely going to be out of luck. But if you like the more popular TV shows, it's definitely not worth the trouble of bringing your own TV.

When I lived in Pegram my first year, the common room TV was always on, so you couldn't necessarily watch what you wanted to watch.

That being said, I own my own TV and I pay for cable, and I don't think twice about it. If I'm sick, watching TV in bed is great, I love watching CNN or MSNBC when I get ready in the morning or watching the nightly news or something.... and in a stressful day, I like watching a show to completely veg out. I mean-- it of course depends on you, but I personally wouldn't not have cable in my room.

Ditto. I watched an insane amount of TV during first semester. Less so second semester since during the day I worked whenever I wasn't in class, but there's still prime-time. ;)
