Does USNA have a program where candidates can follow mids around for the day?

Yes, USNA has Candidate Visit Weekend.

I didn't go to CVW (pretty far to travel from Alaska for a weekend), but I got an invite around mid-September. I then got another invite in December inviting me to one of the Spring ones. So you have a little bit of time to wait before that comes along.

I am pretty sure you need to be invited. You just cant call up and set it up. I think they will invite you if are a competitive candidate.

I have my LOA but I was never invited to a CVW, so I called the admissions office who transferred me to my Area Coordinator. I asked if I could go to one and now I'm signed up to go on April 17.

No, if you are interested in attending a CVW, get your BGO involved. He/She will then probably contact the Area Coordinator, thus giving you a probable invite. I've seen and experienced it being done. :)

Not necessary, just contact your CGO and ask if it is possible you attend a CVW. I wrote my CGO an email and he called me and told me he could make it happen (no BGO involved).

There is a purpose to having a chain-of-command (CoC), including the Admissions CoC:

To handle problems/discrepancies at the lowest level.

To pass information up/down (such as a candidate wants to attend a CVW)

Courtesy to those within the CoC...if you skip over members in the CoC then they are going to be "out of the loop." Also, it lets them help with your interests/intentions

I can think of three exceptions where you should jump the Admissions CoC:
1. Your BGO/AC specifically tell you to contact Admisisons directly because the problem is on a higher level for them to handle
2. You are updating/submitting information to your file (you should still notify your BGO of the information your sending in, so he is aware)
3. Your BGO/AC aren't responsive
