Can someone please explain CVW and how it works? I know what the kids do there, but how does one go about getting to go? My son has his appointment to the Academy (yes, we were thrilled, and shocked it came so early!!) and I think it would be a good idea for him to go to see firsthand what it is all about, instead of just reading about it. Is it too late for him to go? It sounds like it is intended for those without appointments from what I am reading (that the mid does an eval on their "drag") but I want to make sure. Also, I remember someone saying that there are dates in the spring, but does anyone have the exact dates? Please let me know....

TONS of posts to edify your question. Briefly, it's an invitation-only event to designated candidates. There are 5 or 6 of them running from Oct to April. Some get invites to any of the dates, some to specific. The purpose is to expose perceived viable candidates to "real life" at USNA. They go Thurs nite, usually done by noon Sat. They are "dragged" around by a designated Mid, most often a plebe, but not always. It is not intended for those with appointments, altho some may indeed have them as they attend. Most do not, but are seen as potentially viable. However, not receiving an invitation to CVW should not be construed as indication that the USNA views a candidate as not viable to receive an appointment. Questions like yours are best directed to your BGO and Admissions Officer. They can guide you in getting an invite, which I'd speculate yours certainly merits with offer of appointment in hand.

And a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to your student and his parents! A wonderful accomplishment, and great relief to have so early iin the rolling admissions calendar.

At my son's CVW there were many that already had appointments and were using the CVW to make a final decision - including him. His BGO stated that the spring cvw's have many with appointments, kind of the same as admitted student weekends at many of the elite schools in April.

I'll second what Profmom said...my son went last Feb after receiving his appointment...to help make final decision. He had hoped to be invited in the fall, but was not. He was asked to choose from 3 or 4 dates in the winter/spring. Unfortunately, his Feb CVW was in the middle of an ice storm! Why not try calling admissions and asking...they will not bite, nor will they take back the offer of admission! They are there to help you.

The 2nd Semester CVW are:
Jan 22-24
Feb 19-21
Mar 26-28
Apr 16-18
Apr 23-25

Not everyone offered an appointment will be given an opportunity to attend CVW- just not room to accomodate everyone. If your son/daughter is on the fence about accepting an appointment, then by all means contact your BGO and request a CVW. If not, then consider visiting the academy and speak to some Mids on your own.
